OXFORD, Ohio – The University of Akron junior Amir Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) garnered a pair of league titles to direct the Zips' efforts on the final day of the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Miami University at the George L Rider Track on Saturday, May 8.
On the strength of Akron's performances, the Zips finished in second place in the men's team race with 150.50 points, 10.5 points behind league champion Miami. The Akron women's squad placed fourth with 83.50 points to place fourth behind league champion Kent State (102), Eastern Michigan (90) and Miami (89).
The men's team race came down to the final race, the 4x400 relay, with Akron trailing Miami by half a point entering the race. The Zips crossed the line first in the race only to see their season-best performance nullified by a disqualification allowing the RedHawks to win the league crown on their home track.
The Zips' men's squad earned a full point against Kent State in the final standings of the 2020-21 year in the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge, while the Golden Flashes claimed the point in the women's race. Kent State leads 7.0-6.0 in the current standings, with the final half points to be decided this week in baseball and softball showdowns.
"It has been a tough year for our team," Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell. "However, they kept fighting and competing with all their hearts and had a chance at winning a team title. When they saw the 4x400 relay team appear to win, they were so excited, overwhelmed with the moment and they celebrated a little too early. Things happen like that and it is too bad, but that is sport. However, they can hold their heads up high. On paper, they did not win, and they will not be hoisting the winning trophy. However, in their hearts, they know they accomplished something remarkable and found out what they are capable of doing in the toughest of times. With that lesson, they are victorious."
Willis claimed a pair of league titles on the day winning the 100 and 200 meters crossing the line in 10.35 and 20.45, respectively, while running the second leg on the runner-up 4x100 relay team. His performance in the 200 meters stands as the second-fastest effort in outdoor program history.
Willis becomes the first Zip to capture both the men's 100 and 200 meters in the same championship in program history and was rewarded with his selection at the MAC's Most Valuable Performer.
Seniors Brandon Hochbein (Sarver, Pa.) and Malik Hudson (Cleveland, Ohio) captured the top-two spots in the men's decathlon on the strength of a career-best 10-event cumulative scores 7,017 and 6,920.
