TOLEDO, Ohio - Toledo (30-22, 20-16 MAC) earned a pair of triumphs over the University of Akron softball team in Mid-American Conference action on Saturday, May 15, 3-2 in nine innings and 11-3.

The Rockets opened the scoring with a single tally in the bottom of the second inning before Akron (8-45, 7-32 MAC) responded plating a run in the top of the third inning on a lead-off home run by freshman 1B Atlantis Taufa (Fullerton, Calif.).

Toledo retook a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the third inning, before the Zips responded with a single tally in the top of the fifth inning to knot the game at two.

Taufa began the rally with a lead-off single before freshman Carley Auten (Pickerington, Ohio) pinch ran for her and promptly stole second base. A sacrifice bunt from redshirt sophomore RF Molly McChesney (Verona, Wis.) advanced Auten to third base with one out. Senior Macky Mitchiner (Riverside, Calif.) pinch hit for Akron and delivered an RBI groundout to square the contest at two.

The Zips led by 3.2 innings of relief in the circle from redshirt sophomore P Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.) kept the Rockets off the scoreboard over the next four innings, including battling out of a one-out situation with a pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth inning. Toledo garnered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn a 3-2 triumph.

In the nightcap, the Rockets broke open the contest with a six-run effort in the bottom of the second inning en route to a 11-3 victory.

The Zips loaded the bases in the third inning, but Akron was unable to collect a two-out hit to plate a run.

Akron garnered a pair of two-out base hits off the bats of freshman 2B Madison Dudek (Uniontown, Ohio) and redshirt freshman C Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio) in the top of the fifth inning to set the stage for a two-run double from Mitchiner. Taufa followed with a hit by pitch, but the Zips were unable to add to their scoring output in the frame.

In the top of the sixth, redshirt freshman 3B Jaiden Bryant (Hilliard, Ohio) blasted a lead-off home run to left field to cut Akron's deficit to 7-3.

The Rockets scored four runs in the bottom of the frame to finalize an 11-3 win.

Mitchiner led the Zips offensively going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.

The two teams conclude their series with 12 p.m. tilt on Sunday, May 16.
