Seniors Lead Akron in Zips’ 2021 Season Finale

TOLEDO, Ohio - The University of Akron softball team's rally in its final at-bat came up just short as Toledo (31-22, 21-16 MAC) earned a 7-5 triumph over the Zips (8-46, 7-33 MAC) in the season finale for both squads on Sunday, May 16.
The contest marked the final game donning the Akron uniform for seniors Madison Carter (Newnan, Ga.), Jessie Holzman (Medina, Ohio), Samantha Malik (Orlando, Fla.) and Macky Mitchiner (Riverside, Calif.) and the quartet responded registering five of the Zips' eight hits on the afternoon, while collecting four RBI and scoring four runs.
The most memorable of those hits was by Mitchiner, who delivered a three-run home run with two outs in the top of the seventh in her final collegiate at-bat. The blast to right center field cut Akron's deficit to 7-5, while also driving in fellow seniors Carter and Malik.
The Rockets opened the tilt scoring two runs in their first at-bat before adding one, two and two runs in the third, fourth and fifth, innings, respectively, to assume a 7-0 advantage.
The Zips got on the scoreboard with a single tally in the top of the sixth on a one-out double down the line in left by redshirt freshman C Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio). Carter set the stage for the RBI with a one-out infield single before advancing into scoring position with a stolen base. Following a walk by Mitchiner, DeVoe connected on the run-scoring double.
Redshirt junior Lauren Holdsworth (Howell, Mich.) was hit by a pitch to open the seventh inning before freshman Carley Auten (Pickerington, Ohio) pinch ran for her. Auten stole second base and then came across with Akron's second run on double down the line in left field by Malik. Carter struck a two-out single to place runners on the corners for Mitchiner, who belted her first home run of the season, a three-run shot.
The conclusion of the series marked the end of the 2021 campaign for the Zips.
