Â
Akron, Ohio – The Akron Zips opened the day with a 3-1 triumph over the Ohio Bobcats, but fell 4-0 in the nightcap to split the Saturday doubleheader at Skeeles Field.
Â
Akron owns a 2-1 series advantage heading into Sunday's final game of the series and final home game of the season at Skeeles Field. The Zips will honor their seniors prior to the Sunday's game.
Â
Akron opened the day with a 3-1 win over the Bobcats as Zips' junior starting pitcher Taed Heydinger (Bayfield, Colo.) earned the complete game win, allowing four hits and one run in seven innings of work. Heydinger faced 26 batters and struck out four while walking one. Â
Â
Offensively, Akron scored three runs in the fourth inning as junior Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.) led the way with a 2-for-3 effort. Akron scattered five total hits around the yard as juniors Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.), Bradley Goulet (Cottage Grove, Minn) and Cameron Tilly (Canberra, Australia) all collected hits and scored in the winning effort. Tilly and Austin Domer (Orrville, Ohio) each recorded an RBI.
Â
In the third inning, Reinhart singled to right field which ignited the rally. Goulet followed with a singled to left field on a 2-2 offering and senior Connor Regan (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. After Reinhart scored on a wild pitch, Tilly plated Goulet on an RBI single up the middle. Barr followed with a single to right field and stretched it into a double on a bobble by the right fielder. Tilly landed at third base and scored on a sacrifice flyout by Domer.
Â
In game two, Ohio started the scoring in the first inning, earning one run on one hit and an Akron fielding error, while leaving two runners stranded. Ohio added to the 1-0 lead in the seventh inning as the Bobcats' designated hitter Treyben Funderburg launched a three-run homer over the left field wall.
Â
Akron managed only two hits against the Ohio pitching staff of starter Chace Harris (5.2 innings, win) and Brett Manis (1.1 innings, save). Reinhart and Goulet delivered Akron's hits in the first and fourth innings, respectively.
Â
Akron freshman pitcher Jacob Clark (Muncie, Ind.) threw a complete seven innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Â
