DeKalb, Ill. – The Akron Zips baseball team carried a one run, 6-5, lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, but homestanding Northern Illinois Huskies plated two runs for a 7-6 victory at Ralph McKinzie Field on Friday.

Akron started the scoring in the second inning as junior Joshua Nellis (Williamsburg, Va.) drew a walk and junior Tate Wargo (Benld, Ill.) plated the run after a Northern Illinois fielding error. The Huskies tied the game in the bottom of the second inning and claimed a two-run advantage in the third inning.

The lead did not last long as Akron responded with a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, the Zips scored two runs on two hits and an error, starting with a two-out walk by junior Dominick Trevino (Edmond, Okla.). Junior Cameron Tilly (Canberra, Australia) followed with a single to left field, and after and error, Tilly and Trevino  landed on second and third. Trevino scored on a passed ball and junior Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) laced an RBI single to plate Tilly.

In the fifth inning, junior Bradley Goulet (Cottage Grove, Minn.) and junior Zac Granger (Elmira, N.Y.) crossed the plate for the Zips. Goulet reached on an error and scored on a throwing error, while granger reached on a fielder's choice and was drove in by an RBI single by Wargo for a 5-4 Zips lead.

NIU scored in the bottom of the fourth and added a run in the sixth to tie the game, 5-5, but Akron immediately responded with a run for a 6-5 in the top of the seventh inning. The Zips generated the run on two hits as junior Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.) lead-off the inning with a full-count single into right field. Barr moved into scoring position by stealing second base and Wargo blasted a single up the middle for his second RBI of the game.

Northern Illinois used three hits to score two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for the 7-6 walk-off win. NIU's Tristan Michaels (1-1) earned the win with three innings pitched while allowing two hits and a run with four strikeouts and no walks.
Zips graduate Tyler Gault (Rittman, Ohio) was credited with the loss (1-1).Wargo led the Zips with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI and a run scored, while Tilly followed with a 2-of-4 effort and a run scored.

The Zips and the Huskies will be back in action on Saturday, May 1 with a #MACtion doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. ET at Ralph McKinzie Field.
