Zips Baseball Unleashes 14 Hits in Loss to Cavaliers

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips returned to Skeeles Field for a midweek game against Walsh University and unleashed 14 hits that generated three runs as the Cavaliers defeated the Zips 9-3 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Zips' offense was paced by junior Tate Wargo (Benld, Ill.), sophomore Breydan Cavey (Medina, Ohio) and sophomore Sean Swenson (Indianapolis, Ind.) with three hits each.

Wargo reached base four times on a 3-for-4 effort with a walk. After grounding out to second base in his first at-bat, Wargo recorded three straight hits, including a double down the right field line and two singles to right and center. He scored two runs as sophomore Will Cheatham (Brooklyn, N.Y.) collected both RBI on a 1-for-4 effort.

Cavey also was on-base four times, collecting three singles and a walk in four appearances, while Swenson went 3-for-5 with a run scored and three singles. Junior Dominick Trevino (Edmond, Okla.) added two singles and drew a pair of walks in a 2-for-3 performance with four trips around the bases.

Walsh started the scoring in the top of the fourth inning, plating two runs on one hit. The Zips attempted to answer by loading the bases with no outs, but came up empty after relief pitcher Cole Brogan struck out the side.

The Cavaliers added to the lead in the fifth when a two-out double to left centerfield which scored a pair of runs, giving the visitors a 4-0 advantage in the middle of the fifth inning. For the second straight inning, the Zips loaded the bases with no outs, and Cheatham delivered an RBI single to right field, but the Cavaliers cut the second run down at the plate. Swenson followed with a base hit to load the bases again for the Zips, but Akron stranded three as Walsh was able to get out of another jam.

Both teams added a run in the seventh inning as Akron received two-out singles by Swenson and Cavey. The Zips scored the run on a pitcher's balk by the Cavaliers. Zips used momentum for a three-up, three-down eighth inning, and put the first two batters on the bases as Wargo walked and Trevino followed with a base hit to right field. Hara laid down a sacrifice bunt and Cheatham recorded his second RBI of the game with a groundout to second base. At the end of eight, Akron trailed 5-3.

The Cavaliers added four runs to the lead in the final inning on five hits while stranding two runners, 9-3. Cavey opened the ninth inning with a base hit, but the Zips couldn't push any runs across the plate. Walsh scored nine runs on 10 hits, led by Brenden Spaulding's 2-for-4 effort with three RBI and a run scored.

Akron will be back in action at Skeeles Field for a #MACtion weekend series against the Ball State Cardinals. Game one is slated for Friday, April 9 at 3 p.m. followed by a Saturday doubleheader and Sunday 9-inning affair, both days starting at Noon.
