TOLEDO, Ohio – The Akron Zips baseball fell 7-0 and 12-4 on the road at Toledo as the Rockets claimed a 3-0 lead in the #MACtion weekend series at Scott Park on Saturday.
The Zips collected five hits in game one as Zac Granger (Elmira, N.Y.) led the way with a 2-for-3 performance with two singles. Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.), Jackson Miller (Medina, Ohio) and Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio) added singles.
The Rockets scored four runs in the third inning on five hits, including two doubles and a hit by pitch. Toledo added to the 4-0 lead with two-run homerun in the fourth inning before adding a run in the sixth on a double and single. Rocket's starting pitcher Kyle Jones went the distance, throwing seven innings while collecting six strikeouts and issuing no walks for the win, while Akron Taed Heydinger was credited with the loss.
In game two of the doubleheader, Toledo started the scoring in the first inning, receiving a two-run homerun. A pair of doubles plated the third run in the second inning and in the third inning the offense exploded for six runs. In the fourth inning, the Rockets put three more runs on the scoreboard.
Akron scattered six hits around the ballpark and plated four runs, starting with a Shellenbarger base hit in the second inning. Shellenbarger eventually scored on an error by the Rocket's center fielder. Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) followed with a single in the third inning, and Josh Beck (Ottawa Lake, Mich.) reached on a hit by pitch in the fifth. Both, Reinhart and Beck were unable to cross the plate for a run. In the seventh inning, Akron generated three runs on three hits, a walk and a hit by pitch.
Dylan James (Danville, Ohio) was hit by a pitch to lead-off the inning, and Tate Wargo (Benld, Ill.) followed with a pinch-hit single to center field. Austin Domer (Orrville, Ohio) laid down a perfectly placed bunt and Beck fired an RBI single into right field. Kaito Hara (Houston, Texas) collected the second RBI with a shot to center field and Dominick Trevino (Edmond, Okla.) drew a base on balls for the third RBI of the inning.
