AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's swimming and diving team looks to capture its eighth consecutive Mid-American Conference title this week as the Zips head to Ypsilanti, Mich. to compete in the 2021 MAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Eastern Michigan on Thursday-Saturday, April 15-17 at Jones Natatorium.

Beginning Thursday, preliminary heats will begin at 10:30 a.m. each day and finals are slated for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, 6:00 p.m. on Friday and 6:10 p.m. on Saturday. Additionally, 1-meter diving preliminaries and finals will take place Thursday, while 3-meter diving preliminaries are Friday and finals will be held on Saturday.

Due to COVID-19 protocols no fans will be permitted at the 2021 MAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Zips, under the direction of eighth-year head coach Brian Peresie, were unanimously picked to capture the conference title in the league's preseason coaches' poll. Akron enters the MAC Championships with a 4-1 dual record, all against MAC opponents this season. The Zips hosted a pair of meets (only one scored) and traveled to Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. Akron placed first at the Zippy Invitational and claimed second at the Shamrock Invitational.

Junior Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba), sophomore Paige Kalik (Irwin, Pa.) and senior Andrea Bugariu (Shelby Township, Mich.) all represented the Zips at the NCAA Championships. Watson's performance at the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships included three finishes inside the Top 25 in three events and two school records (*), placing 14th in the 200 IM (1:56.85*), 18th in the 100 Free (48.63*) and 22nd in the 100 Fly (52.30). Meanwhile, Kalik and Bugariu competed at the 2021 NCAA Zone C Diving Championships at the Lancaster Aquatic Center in Lexington, Ky, landing 13th (Kalik) and 19th (Bugariu) overall among the 29-diver field in the 3-meter diving event. In addition off the 1-meter boards, Kalik and Bugariu finished 16th and 21st, respectively.

At the 2020 MAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, Akron captured its seventh consecutive conference title. The Zips claimed the title posting 811 points throughout four days of competition. Buffalo finished second overall with 738.5 points, while Eastern Michigan placed third with 485 points. Watson was named Most Outstanding Swimmer and sophomore Weronika Gorecka (Wroclaw, Poland) was named freshman Swimmer of the Year, while

senior Paula Garcia (Madris, Spain) and Watson were selected First Team All-MAC and junior Andrea Fischer (Oak Grove, Minn.), junior Olivia Gardner (Bromsgrove, England) , Gorecka,
junior Sofia Henell (Linkoping, Sweden) and senior Brooke Lamoureux (Victoria, Canada) claimed Second Team All-MAC honors.
