AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field team will open its outdoor campaign with a pair of meets this weekend as the Zips will partake in the Northeast Ohio Quad in Youngstown, Ohio, on Friday, April 2, before competing at the Dave Labor Invitational on Saturday, April 3 in Slippery Rock, Pa.
UP NEXT: The Northeast Ohio Quad, hosted by Youngstown State, will commence at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 2 with the men's hammer and javelin and the women's discus and shot put.
Jumping events will kick off with the women's long jump at 12:30 p.m. before running events get underway at 1:30 p.m. with the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. The final race, the women's and men's 4x400 relays are scheduled to start at 4:45 p.m.
The Zips will go against a four-team field which includes Akron, Ashland, Kent State and Youngstown State.
Scheduled to compete for the Zips at the Dave Labor Invitational hosted by Slippery Rock University is junior Zoi Balamouti (Heraklion, Greece) in the women's triple jump, freshman Fegor Clifford (Delta State, Nigeria) in the women's long jump and triple jump and junior Carlyn Zahner (North East, Pa.) in the women's high jump.
The women's long jump kicks off for the Zips at 10:30 a.m., while the women's triple jump will follow the men's event at the same time. The women's high jump is scheduled for a noon start.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2021 indoor season as the Zips were rated in the Event Squad rankings released on March 1, 2021 as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron ranked fifth nationally in the men's triple jump and among the top 20 in six different events.
The Zips also rated seventh in the men's long jump, ninth in the men's pole vault, 11th in the men's weight throw, 14th in the women's long jump and 19th in the women's 800 meters.
The Akron men and women ranked fifth and ninth, respectively, in the Great Lakes Regional polls.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2021 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has a trio of student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the 2021 indoor campaign, including, junior Nuh Andu (Doha, Qatar), who was sixth in the nation in the men's high jump (7-2.25/2.19m).
Also rated among the top-25 was freshman Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) (11th in the men's pole vault – 17-9.75 (5.43m) and senior Hesham Eldesouky (Nasr City, Egypt) (21st in the men's triple jump – 51-10.50/15.81m).
AKRON DUO EARNS ALL-AMERICA ACCOLADES AT NCAA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS: Akron's Hunter Garretson earned first-team All-America accolades with his eighth-place performance in the men's pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Arkansas on March 13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Garretson faced some early adversity in the competition as it came down to his third and final attempt to clear the opening bar at 17-4.50 (5.30m).
He successfully eclipsed the next bar of 17-8.50 (5.40m) on his opening run at the height, before coming up shy of establish a new career-best with a clearance of the ensuing mark of 18-0.50 (5.50m).
On the strength of Garretson's performance, the Zips extended their men's team scoring streak at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships to eight consecutive championships, the 13th-longest streak in the NCAA. Additionally, Akron now owns the 10th-longest men's scoring streak at the combined indoor and outdoor championships.
On the opening day of the NCAA Indoor Championships, Nuh Andu earned All-America honors for the first time in his decorated Zips' career finishing 11th in the men's field with a mark of 6-11.75 (2.13m).
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips posted 10 marks during the indoor campaign that rank among the top-five performances all-time in Akron indoor track and field program history.
NORTHEAST OHIO QUAD (2019): The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams collected 18 victories as part of 41 overall top-three performances on the opening day of the Northeast Ohio Quad on April 5, 2019 at the Farmers National Bank Field on the campus of Youngstown State University.
Recording the then second-fastest performance in outdoor program history to win the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a career-best time of 10:27.21 was Mackenzie Andrews.
Taking the top-two spots in the women's 1,500 meters was senior Leah Recker (Findlay, Ohio) and Haley Hess, as the duo crossed the line in 4:39.61 and 4:41.95, respectively. Recker went on to also win the women's 800 meters in 2:16.61.
Lucy Bryan cleared 14-4 (4.37m) to take first-place honors in the women's pole vault, while redshirt junior Abby Helminiak (Toledo, Ohio) surpassed 12-11.50 (3.95m) to finish second.
Matt Ludwig eclipsed 18-0.50 (5.50m) to win the men's pole vault, while senior Matt Keim (Bollivar, Ohio) placed third with a mark of 16-8.25 (5.09m).
The Zips captured the top-two finishes in the men's long jump as Jordan Latimer and Hesham Eldesouky posted marks of 24-10.50 (7.58m) and 24-1.50 (7.35m), respectively.
Registering a mark of 50-1.75 (15.28m) to win the men's triple jump was Eldesouky.
Nick Stricklen captured the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:18.87, while Marc Migliozzi and senior Andre Bollam-Godbott (Brunswick, Ohio) finished first and second, respectively, in the men's 1,500 meters registering times of 3:56.53 and 3:57.59.
Senior Lindsey Scarton (Berea, Ohio) recorded a time of 17:27.53 to capture the women's 5,000 meters.
Nuh Andu won the men's high jump with a mark of 6-9.50 (2.07m), while Maike Anstett finished first in the women's high jump with a clearance of 5-6.50 (1.69m).
Zoi Balamouti recorded the top mark in the women's long jump, 17-7 (5.36m) to win the event.
Balamouti and Anstett later recorded marks of 37-5.25 (11.41m) and 37-5.25 (11.41m) to place second and third in the women's triple jump.
Dara Perry was first across the line in the women's 100-meter hurdles in 13.85.
Junior Amir Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the men's 400 meters in a time of 48.96.
Iman Batiste recorded a career-best time of 57.67 to triumph in the women's 400 meters, while Bailey Lack crossed the line second in 58.21.
Junior Sara Foster (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), Dimitra Gnafaki and Sydney Stokes swept the top-three spots in the women's 400-meter hurdles posting times of 61.93, 62.78 and 64.54, respectively.
The women's 4x400 relay team of Foster, Gnafaki, Lack and Batiste registered a winning time of 3:56.83.
Led by victories in the men's and women's javelin from Ian Behm and junior Laurel Bristow (Pittsburgh, Pa.), the University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams capped the final day of the Northeast Ohio Quad registering a pair of individual victories as part of six overall top-three performances at the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex on April 6, 2019.
Behm won the men's javelin with a mark of 205-2 (62.53m), while Bristow captured the women's javelin with a mark of 144-9 (44.13m).
