HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The University of Akron women's softball was dealt a pair of setbacks in their showdown with Marshall on Wednesday, March 3, as the Thundering Herd swept a doubleheader from the Zips, 7-4 and 8-0, respectively.

Redshirt freshman OF Molly McChesney (Verona, Wis.) continued her torrid start to the campaign going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and a stolen base in the opener for Akron, while freshman OF Anna Aquino (Medina, Ohio) led off for the Zips and went 2-for-4 at the dish, including scoring two runs.

Freshman P Olivia Stefanoni (Hudson, Ohio) earned the start for Akron and allowed three hits in 3.2 innings, while striking out three. Freshman P Sheridon Wilber (Rock Creek, Ohio) tossed 2.1 innings in relief and surrendered one run on three hits.

Ashley Blessin struck out seven en route to pitching a complete game in the opener for Marshall.

Aquino and McChesney opened the tilt with back-to-back singles to place runners on the corner. McChesney followed with her team-leading third stolen base of the season, which allowed Aquino to score on a Marshall throwing error. McChesney came around to score the Zips' second run of the inning on the third error of the frame for the Thundering Herd.

Aquino and McChesney repeated their earlier efforts in the top of the third with consecutive base knocks. Senior DP Jessie Holzman (Medina, Ohio) moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. A groundout plated Akron's third run before a Marshall error allowed McChesney to cross the dish and extend the Zips' lead to 4-0.

The Thundering Herd responded with seven unanswered tallies, including a five-run fourth inning to secure a 7-4 victory in game one.

In game two, McChesney extended her hitting streak to four with a first-inning bunt singles and finished the tilt 1-for-2 at the plate. The Zips also garnered singles from Holzman and redshirt freshman SS Jaiden Bryant (Hilliard, Ohio), along with a double from redshirt freshman 2B Maggie Sons (Dalzell, Ill.).

The Thundering Herd scored three runs in the first inning and two in the second to assume a lead they didn't relinquish.

A trio of Akron pitchers in redshirt sophomore Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.), redshirt junior Alexa DiFeo (Akron, Ohio) and Wilber worked in the circle for the Zips in the nightcap, as the trio struck out one, while issuing one walk.

Laney Jones fanned four en route to earning the win for Marshall.

Akron is slated to return to action this weekend as the Zips will play a pair of doubleheaders at Youngstown State. The series opening twinbill is set for Friday, March 5, at 2 and 4 p.m., before the series wraps up with a pair of games at 12 and 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 7.
