YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -Â The University of Akron women's softball team dropped the opening two contests of a four-game weekend set at Youngstown State on Friday, March 5, as the Penguins bettered the Zips, 7-6 and 11-3.
Â
Akron and Youngstown State went back-and-forth in the opening game as each side responded to the scoring of the other before a walk-off single gave the Penguins a 7-6 victory.
Â
Redshirt freshman OF Molly McChesney (Verona, Wis.) and senior DP/INF Jessie Holzman (Medina, Ohio) each delivered a pair of hits for the Zips, while redshirt freshman DP Â Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio) blasted Akron's first home run of the year, a two-run shot, in the seventh inning, as part of her three RBI afternoon.
Â
Junior P Olivia Otani (Canton, Ohio) and freshman P Olivia Stefanoni (Hudson, Ohio) combined to strike out nine batters in seven innings in the circle for the Zips.
Â
McChesney opened the scoring in the top of the third inning striking a lead-off triple to the gap in left center before coming across the plate on a sacrifice bunt by freshman 1B Atlantis Taufa (Fullerton, Calif.).
Â
Trailing 2-1 heading to the top of the fifth inning, back-to-back singles from McChesney and Holzman, along with a walk to Taufa, loaded the bases. The Penguins walked in the tying run before a sacrifice fly off the bat of DeVoe gave Akron a 3-2 lead.
Â
Youngstown State responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to regain the lead.
Â
Heading into their final at-bat in the top of the seventh inning, the Zips scored three runs, including a two-run shot from DeVoe and an RBI triple courtesy of freshman OF Anna Aquino (Medina, Ohio) to assume a 6-4 advantage.
Â
The Penguins responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and one in the eighth to earn the extra-inning victory.
Â
In game two, Aquino led Akron offensively going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
Â
DeVoe opened the scoring in the contest with an RBI bases-loaded walk in the first inning, but the Zips were unable to capitalize with a crooked number in the frame leaving the bases loaded.
Â
After the Penguins squared the contest at one in the bottom half of the inning, Akron took a 3-1 lead on the strength of a one-out two RBI double from Holzman in the top of the second.
Â
The Zips got the first two outs of the bottom of the second before Youngstown State scored six runs to assume a 7-3 advantage.
Â
The Penguins added a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, to complete an 11-3 triumph.
Â
Akron is slated to complete its four-game series at Youngstown State on Sunday, March 7, with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
