Zips Dominate Dual Meet, Defeats Ball State 208-91

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips women's swimming and diving team posted a dominating 208-91 victory in a dual meet over Ball State at the University of Akron Ocasek Natatorium on Saturday.

The Zips won 13-of-16 events and captured eight silver medals and 10 bronze awards.

The Zips 100 yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Olivia DeRodes (24.36), sophomore Rachel Schiffli (22.98), junior Lauren Cooper (23.66) and sophomore Victoria Kaufman (23.05) opened the meet with a convincing two-second win, generating Akron's initial 11 points. Akron also claimed the third spot in the race with a 1:37.70 time by freshman Madeline Dyer (24.75), freshman Madelyn Gatrall (23.91), sophomore Weronika Gorecka (25.09) and freshman Giovanna Cappabianca (25.09).

Akron's 800 Free relay team finished first and second in the final event of the meet. The team of Gorecka (1:52.68), Kaufman (1:55.34), senior Paula Garcia (1:57.51) and senior Brooke Lamoureux (1:56.28) blew the competition away with a 7:41.81 time, stopping the time over eight seconds faster than the runner-up squad, also from Akron. The runner-up squad of freshman Margaret Clough (1:58.24), DeRodes (1:59.30), junior Lauren Cooper (1:56.32) and sophomore Sara Bozso (1:56.13) posted a 7:49.99 time.

On the boards, senior Paige Kalik and junior Kamryn Goodrick each posted wins. Kalik won the 3-meter diving event with a 325.57 final score and claimed second place off the 1-meter board with a 281.70 total. Goodrick won the 1-meter event with a 295.20 ledger and placed third overall in the 3-meter event (286.65 points).

The Zips had nine swimmers grab top honors individually as Gorecka and Schiffli posted two wins each. Gorecka won the 100 yard backstroke (55.70) and the 100 yard butterfly (56.73), while Schiffli touched first in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events with 23.60 and 51.54 times, respectively. Also placing in these events were 100 Back: Kaufman (2nd, 57.19), freshman Rachel Sabotin (3rd, 57.85); 100 Fly: Kaufman (2nd, 57.22); 50 Free: Gatrall (3rd, 24.38), DeRodes (5th, 24.48); 100 Free: Gatrall (2nd, 52.64), DeRodes (5th, 53.16).

Senior Brooke Lamoureux won the 1000 yard freestyle (10:15.56) by nine seconds and placed second in the 500 yard freestyle (5:03.17), where Akron claimed the third through fifth spots; sophomore Andrea Galisteo (3rd, 5:07.26), sophomore Gail Workman (4th, 5:07.43) and Bozsa (5th, 5:13.04).

 Junior Andrea Fischer placed third in the 1000 Free and went on to win the 200 yard breaststroke with a 2:18 46 time. Garcia claimed third (2:20.79 in the 200 Breast, while senior Ally Wharton (2:21.22) was fourth.
Rounding out the individual winners were junior Olivia Gardner, sophomore Alyssa Riker and Sabotin. Gardner posted the win in the 200 yard backstroke with 2:04.67 while her teammate Clough was hot on her trail, claiming second with a 2:04.88 time. Riker was a winner in the 200 butterfly (2:05.83), while Clough (2:08.15) and Gardner (2:11.80) touched third and fourth, respectively. Sabotin completed the 200 yard individual medley with a first place 2:04.75 time, while Gardner was second (2:07.93).

Ball Sate posted wins in the 200 Free (1:51.54), 100 Breast (1:02.90) and 500 Free (4:58.20).

Akron swimming and diving will be back in action on Saturday, March 27 at 1 p.m. as the Zips host the Bowling Green Falcons at Ocasek Natatorium.
