Akron Baseball Wraps-Up Week with Two Wins at Skeeles Field

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips baseball team finished the week with a pair of wins at Skeeles Field, defeating Grand Valley State (5-3) and Mercyhurst (12-1).

On Friday, Akron scored two runs in the seventh and eighth innings to claim a come-from-behind victory. The Zips distributed 10 hits for five runs as Zac Granger led the way with a 3-of-4 effort at the plate which included two doubles and a single with a RBI. Connor Regan, Cameron Tilly, and Jerry Reinhart followed with two hits each while Shellenbarge posted one hit. All five played recorded a double as the Zips distributed six two-baggers on the day.

On the mound, starter Conor Steinbaugh threw six innings for the Zips, allowing two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Mathew Radtka was first in relief, hurling 1.2 innings and gave up one run on two hits and a walk. Mark Meyer earned the win as he struck out two of the five batters faced and relinquished only one hit.

Grand Valley plated two runs in the third inning for an early 2-0 lead. The Zips cut the deficit in half after Shellenbarge doubled to left centerfield and Justin Barr drove him in on a groundout to the shortstop.

Grand Valley State pushed the lead back to two runs in the seventh, but Akron responded with two runs of their own to keep the contest within one run. Regan started off the inning with a single to right field and Tilly followed with a double down the rightfield line, placing runners at second and third. Reinhart drove in both runs on a double down the leftfield line.

With two outs in the eighth inning, Granger and Regan issued back-to-back doubles to take a 4-3 lead as Granger crossed the plate on Regan's extra-base hit to left. The Zips added an insurance run after Tilly singled to centerfield, driving in Regan for the 5-3 win.

On Sunday, the Akron offense exploded for 16 hits in a lopsided victory over Mercyhurst. Nine different batters contributed hits for the Zips as Granger and Tilly recorded doubles, Brad Goulet blasted a triple and Tilly belted a solo homerun. Barr and Tilly led Akron with 3-for-4 performances as both players recorded three RBI.

First inning produced no runs on either side, but Zips pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the second as Nowak singled and Tilly blasted a double to right centerfield to put runners on second and third with one out. Reinhart followed with an RBI infield single for the Zips first run.

In the following inning, Thurman drew a walk and a sac bunt by Barr sent him into scoring position. Granger singled through the left side, allowing Thurman to plate Akron's second run from second base uncontested.

Akron added to the 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the fifth inning by plating three runs on three hits for a 5-0 advantage. Granger and Tilly both doubled as Granger sent one run across the plate and Tilly recorded two RBI. Akron continued to unleash hit after hit, scoring one run in the sixth and three runs in each seventh and eighth innings.

Akron limited Mercyhurst to one run on two hits as John Creel earned the win in dominant fashion. Creel issued 10 strikeouts while walking five batters and allowing both hits in six innings of work. Jackson Hickert hurled the final three innings, allowing no hits and one run on four walks and three strikeouts.

The Zips open Mid-American Conference play this week at Skeeles Field against Eastern Michigan. The four-game series is slated to begin with one 9-inning ballgame on Friday, March 19 at 3 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, March 20 with first pitch at Noon.
