AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips baseball team fell 5-1 to Wittenberg on Wednesday night, but looks to bounce back against Salem on Thursday, March 11 at Skeeles Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Zips (2-1) produced one run on five hits and scored in the bottom of the second inning when junior Brad Goulet (Cottage Grove, Minn.) singled up the middle with runners on first and second. Graduate Josh Nowak (Chicago, Ill.) scored for the Zips after reaching on a Wittenberg miscue. Akron left seven runners on base as the Zips were unable to push any additional runs across the plate.
Wittenberg opened the game with a pair of runs in the first inning as Jack Hollinshead hit a two-run shot over the leftfield fence. The Tigers (1-0) added one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings for the win. The Tigers delivered seven timely hits to capitalize on seven walks issued by Akron.
Freshman Sammy Tortorella (Pittsburg, Pa.) hurled four complete innings for the Zips, facing 21 batters while allowing four hits, four runs and four walks with two strikeouts. He was credited with the loss. Freshman Yassir Kahook (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) relived Tortorella of his duties in the fifth inning and allowed three hits, three walks and a strikeout while relinquishing one unearned run.
Wittenberg's Rusty Hayhurst earned the win for Wittenberg.
