Buffalo, N.Y. – The Akron Zips women's swimming and diving squad suffered a 169-131 setback as the Buffalo Bulls defeated Akron on Friday at Alumni Arena Pool and Natatorium.

In the 16-event meet, Akron posted four wins and nine runner-up finishes. The meet opened with the Zips claiming second and third in the 200 Medley Relay as junior Lauren Cooper (Dublin, Ohio), junior Andrea Fischer (Oak Grove, Minn.), sophomore Rachel Schiffli (Indianapolis, Ind.) and sophomore Victoria Kaufman (Westminster, Md.) earning runner-up with a 1:45.85 time. The Zips followed with a silver and bronze showing in the 1000 Freestyle as sophomore Gail Workman (Cincinnati, Ohio) and junior Olivia Gardner (Bromsgrove, England) finished second and third with 10:19.82 and 10:31.41 times, respectively.

In the 100 Backstroke, Akron placed second and third again, this time, freshman Madelyn Gatrall (Windsor, Canada) and sophomore Weronika Gorecka (Wroclaw, Poland) stopped the timers at 55.34 and 58.72. The fifth event, the 100 Breaststroke, Akron scored 10 points as senior Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain), Fischer, freshman Madeline Dyer (Akron, Ohio) and sophomore Sara Bozso (Budapest, Hungary) claimed the second through fifth spots.

It wasn't until the sixth event that the Zips claimed their first win. Freshman Rachel Sabotin (Columbus, Ind.) earned that first victory in the 200 Butterfly with a 2:01.96 time, and sophomore Paige Kalik (Irwin, Pa.) followed with the Zips second top finish. Kalik scored 285.23 points in the 3-Meter Diving event, besting the competition by nearly five points.

Akron continues its winning ways when Gorecka edged Buffalo's Nicole Roitenberg by nearly two seconds in the 200 Backstroke, 2:01.28 to 2:03.13, and Fischer placed first in the 200 Breaststroke, 2:18.35.

Sabotin and Kalik each picked-up four additional points for the Zips scoring with a pair of runners-up in the 100 Butterfly (56.42) and the 1-Meter Diving (278.33) events. in addition, the team of Schiffli, Cooper, sophomore Olivia Derodes (Fremont, Ohio) and Kaufman rounded out the second-place finishers with a silver in the 400 Freestyle Relay, 3:30.00.

Akron is scheduled to be back in action at the Buffalo Diving Invite on Friday-Sunday, Feb. 19-21 at Alumni Arena Pool and Natatorium.
