AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's swimming and diving team used 7-of-11 events to establish new times for 13 swimmers during Friday's prelims of the Akron Last Chance Meet at the Ocasek Natatorium.

All of Akron's competitors set benchmark times for the 2020-21 season as freshman Rachel Sabotin (Columbus, Ind.) opened the three-day event for the Zips with a 1:02.26 time in the 100 Butterfly.

Sophomore Andrea Galisteo (Madrid, Spain) followed with a 4:28.50 time in the 400 Freestyle, while three Akron swimmers set qualifying marks in the third and fourth events.

Senior Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain), junior Andrea Fischer (Oak Grove, Minn.) and freshman Madeline Dyer (Akron, Ohio) posted new times in the 100 Breaststroke – Garcia (1:11.12), Fischer (1:11.31) and Dyer (1:14.32) – while junior Lauren Cooper (Dublin, Ohio), freshman Madelyn Gatrall (Windsor, Canada) and freshman Margaret Clough (Lebanon, Ohio) competed in the 100 Backstroke for the first time this season – Cooper (1:04.61), Gatrall (1:03.25) and Clough (1:06.44).

Freshman Astrid Halvorsen (Stroemmen, Norway) stopped the timer at 59.13 in the 100 Freestyle, while sophomore Sara Bozso (Budapest, Hungary) and freshman Giovanna Cappabianca (Hudson, Ohio) clocked 2:35.85 and 2:40.30 times, respectively, in the 200 Breaststoke.

Rounding out the Zips first day of competition were sophomores Rachel Schiffli (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Victoria Kaufman (Westminster, Md.) in the 50 Freestyle. Schiffli touched at 26.87 and Kaufman followed at 26.96.
The Akron Last Chance Meet consists of three teams as the Buffalo Bulls and Ohio Bobcats will join the Akron Zips. In relation to current COVID-19 advisories and protocols, the meet will be closed to the public and scheduled to stream live by Zips Digital Network on GoZips.com.

Competition continues on Saturday as the event schedule starts with the preliminaries at 10:30 a.m. followed by the finals at 6 p.m. The meet concludes on Sunday, Feb. 28, with prelims at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
