Akron Comeback Falls Short at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio- The Akron women's basketball team (2-1) came up short as the Zips fell to Youngstown State on the road, 57-55, on Monday night at the Beeghly Center.

Redshirt senior Jordyn Dawson (Huntington, W Va.) led the Zips with a double-double scoring 19 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, while freshman Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10 points and grabbed nine boards. Sophomore Annika Corcoran (Painesville, Ohio) contributed nine points.

Akron shot 32.3 percent (20-of-62) from the floor and 19.2 percent (5-of-26) from beyond the arc, while YSU shot 32.2 percent from the floor and connected on 9-of-28 from three-point range. The Zips struggled from the charity stripe connecting on just 10-of-18 (55.6 percent).

A Bass jumper at the top of key got the Zips on board after scoreless first three minutes of the game. Akron used an 8-2 scoring run in the final two minutes of the first quarter to pull ahead, 13-7, before YSU stopped the run with a three-pointer that ended the quarter.

An 8-2 run at the start of the second quarter put the Zips ahead, 21-12, as Dawson tallied all the team's eight points during the run. The nine-point lead Akron gained did not last as the Penguins used a 12-2 scoring run that put YSU ahead, 24-23 headed into the break.

Coming out of the break, a corner three-pointer from Corcoran fueled a 7-0 run for the Zips and put Akron ahead, 32-26. YSU used runs of 4-0 and 8-0 that placed the Penguins ahead, 39-35 with 1:55 left to play in the third. Redshirt sophomore Layne Ferrell (Franklin, Ohio) was sent to the charity stripe and connected on a pair of free throws that cooled the Penguins' momentum, before YSU closed the third quarter with a 43-39 lead, outscoring the Zips 19-16.

After YSU stated the fourth quarter with a corner three, the Zips' offense found its groove and fired off a 7-0 run with layups from Dawson, Ferrell, and Corcoran. The score remained knotted for three minutes before YSU knocked down a trio of three pointers that put the Penguins in control 55-49 with 1:45 left to play. The remainder of the game was a back-and-forth affair marked by clutch free throw shooting by the Zips. With 2.8 seconds remaining and down two, Ferrell was sent to the line to shoot a pair, but couldn't convert and YSU escaped with a 57-55 victory.

Akron will be back on the road as the Zips will face Duquesne on Tuesday, Nov. 23. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
