Akron Claims 13 Events in Dual Meet Win Over RedHawks

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips swimming and diving teams opened Mid-American Conference action by defeating the Miami RedHawks 190-110 on Saturday at Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium.

Akron won five consecutive events to open the meet en route to 13 first-place touches and eight runner-up performances. Miami stopped the timer first in three events, including the final event of the meet. Akron garnered runner-up accolades in all three of the RedHawks' wins.

Starting the meet with a win was the 200-yard medley relay team of Madelyn Gatrall (26.08, backstroke), Andrea Fischer (28.98, breaststroke), Rachel Schiffli (24.57, butterfly) and Sarah Watson (22.83, freestyle) with a 1:42.46 time.

All four members of that squad went on to capture individual wins as Watson led the team with three wins and a runner-up finish. Watson added wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.39) and 200-yard individual medley (2:04.05) and touched second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.83). Gatrall placed first the 100-yard backstroke (54.85), Fischer won in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.01) and Schiffli paced the 50-yard freestyle (23.67).

Paulina Nogaj and Paige Kalik followed with a pair of wins each. Nogaj captured the 100-yard freestyle (51.91) and butterfly (55.35) events, while Kalik recorded two diving victories, winning the 3-meter and 1-meter events with scores of 306.07 and 271.35, respectively.

Also arriving at the top of the winner's podium were Brooke Lamoureux, Weronika Gorecka and Paula Garcia. Lamoureux claimed the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:29.16), Gorecka won the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.18) and Garcia earned the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.87) win.

Akron is scheduled to be on the road for its second dual meet of the season as the Zips travel to Ypsilanti, Mich. to battle Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m.
