DEKALB, ILL. – A goal in the 84th minute (83:17) lifted No. 16 Northern Illinois (12-1-2, 4-0-2 MAC) to a 2-1 Mid-American Conference triumph over the University of Akron on Saturday, Oct. 30.
The victory clinched the regular season league title for the Huskies and the right to host the upcoming MAC Men's Soccer Championship.
The 19th-ranked Zips (9-4-3, 2-2-1 MAC) will now look to punch a return ticket to DeKalb, Ill., with a result in their regular season finale at Western Michigan on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m.
"It was a tough loss this afternoon," Akron head coach Jared Embick commented. "We are disappointed as we had the momentum before we lost focus and paid the price. We need to now move on and focus on Thursday."
The Zips posted a 6-5 edge in second-half shots, but the Huskies registered an overall 12-9 advantage in shots in the affair.
Northern Illinois took the early advantage in the match when Pepe Martinez connected on a tally at the 22:01 mark.
The Huskies entered the intermission maintaining a 1-0 edge on the strength of a 7-3 margin in first-half shots.
The Zips leveled the contest at one in the 64th minute (63:02) when sophomore Ryan Kingsford (Herne Bay, England) registered his team-leading sixth goal of the season off an assist from senior Diogo Pacheco (Lisbon, Portugal).
The Huskies scored the game-winner at the 83:17 mark when Nick Markanich found the back of the net courtesy of an assist from Anthony Markanich.
Pacheco led the Zips with a team-high four shots on the afternoon.

The Zips travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., for a showdown with Western Michigan on Thursday, Nov. 4. The tilt with the Broncos is slated for 4 p.m.
