Zips Classic: Akron Breaks Three Meet Records, Sets Two NCAA Marks

Akron, Ohio – The Akron swimming and diving program opened its 2021-22 season with a trio of new Zips Classic meet records and two NCAA Diving Zones qualifying scores en route to 5-of-6 first place touches at the Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium on Friday night.

Akron started the meet in record-breaking fashion as the 400-yard Medley Relay team of sophomore Madelyn Gatrall (Windsor, Canada), senior Andrea Fischer (Oak Grove, Minn.), senior Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and senior Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) flew to a 3:36.51 time, replacing the previous record of 3:37.33 set in 2018.

Watson set the second meet record for the Zips, clocking a 22.81 time in the 50-yard Freestyle to best the 22.84 time set in 2019 by Nogaj. The Zips swept the Top 10 positions in the 50 Free, scoring 138.5 points in the event.

During the final women's event of the session, Akron broke the third meet standard as the team of Watson, Nogaj, senior Weronika Gorecka (Wroclaw, Poland) and freshman Kendall Craig (Evans City, Pa.) cruised to a 7:18.47 time in the 800-yard Freestyle Relay, topping the previous time of 7:19.32 set in 2018.

In the women's 1-meter diving event, senior Kamryn Goodrick (Chesterland, Ohio) and junior Paige Kalik (Irwin, Pa.) qualified for the NCAA Diving Zones with scores above the 265-point threshold. Goodrick won the event with a 288.15 total, while Kalik posted 271.58 points to finish runner-up.

Adding to the Zips' five first place touches in the six women's events was freshman Abigail Daniel (Bristow, Va.). Daniel used her collegiate debut for a win in the 200-yard Individual Medley with a 2:02.88 time. Akron swept the top three spots of the race with Craig earning second (2:04.79) and senior Olivia Gardner (Bromsgrove, England) touching third (2:05.29).

Akron leads the women's side of the Zips Classic with 493.5 points, while Denison (233 pts.), Youngstown State (179 pts.) and Xavier (158.5 pts.) follow.

On the men's side, Denison leads with 367 total points followed by YSU (296 pts.) and Xavier (219 pts.).

The final day of the Zips Classic is scheduled for two sessions. The first Saturday session is slated for a 10 a.m. start followed by the final session at 5 p.m. Fans can follow the action on the Meet Mobile app (paid subscription needed)

Tickets can be purchased with cash only one hour before the start of each session in the main entrance of ONAT. All session passes are available for $15 or single session passes may be purchased for $7 each. Facemasks are required inside Ocasek Natatorium.
