Zips Classic: Akron Sets Three NCAA Marks, Two Meet Records Fall

Akron, Ohio – The Akron swimming and diving won all six women's swimming events, received three NCAA D1B performances and set a pair of meet records in the second session of the Zips Classic at the Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium on Saturday morning.

Senior Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) captured her fourth meet record with a 52.87 time in the 100-yard butterfly. Her time was a NCAA D1B mark and replaced the 53.06 time set by senior Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) in 2019 – Nogaj finished second with a NCAA D1B time of 53.05.

Watson was also a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay t senior Olivia Gardner (Bromsgrove, England) hat opened the session with a win(1:31.73). Nogaj, senior Sophia Henell (Linkoping, Sweden) and junior Victoria Kaufman (Westminster, Md.) rounded out the 200 Free team.

Nogaj went on to claim the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:49.13 time, while Akron registered the Top 5 performances in the 100-yard breaststroke as senior Andrea Fischer (Oak Grove, Minn.) won the event (1:02.55).

Sophomore Madelyn Gatrall (Windsor, Canada) eclipsed the second meet standard with a NCAA D1B mark of 53.75 in the 100-yard backstroke, and senior Olivia Gardner (Bromsgrove, England) won the 400-yard individual medley with a 4:24.63 time and Craig touched second (4:27.84).

Akron leads the women's side of the Zips Classic with 942.5 points followed by Denison (508 pts.), Youngstown State (323.5 pts.) and Xavier (301 pts.).

On the men's side, Denison leads with 754 total points followed by YSU (582 pts.) and Xavier (508 pts.).

The final session is slated to begin at 5 p.m. Fans can follow the action on the Meet Mobile app (paid subscription needed). Single session passes may be purchased for $7 each. Facemasks are required inside Ocasek Natatorium.
