Zips Complete Five-Set Comeback Over Miami, Completes Series Sweep

OXFORD, Ohio- Despite trailing in the fifth set, the Akron volleyball team (8-8, 2-2 MAC) came back to win and secure the series sweep after defeating Miami (27-29, 18-25, 25-22, 25-14, 15-10) on Friday night at Millett Hall.

Four Zips registered double-digit kills with senior Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) leading the way with 23 kills. Sophomore Faith Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) had 12 kills, while seniors Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill.) and Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) finished with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
The Zips defense above the net finished with a match-high 30 total blocks to Miami's 10. Freshman Karleighana Jones (White Plains, N.Y) Â and senior Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) registered a match-high seven blocks each, while Weigand also had a match-high 57 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Akron returns home next week for games with Ball State and Toledo. On Friday, Oct. 8, the Zips will host the Cardinals in the JAR at 7 p.m., while Akron will face Toledo the following day, Saturday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the Zips led by four in the opening set (12-8), Miami took advantage of a 6-1 run to take a 14-3 lead. The two teams would battle it out and tie the score 13 more times until Miami forced the set into extra plays. A kill from Jones evened the score at 27 all, but the RedHawks took the No.1 set with back-to-back kills.
- The RedHawks kept their foot on the gas in the second set and finished with a .375 hitting percentage, while holding the Zips to a .194. The RedHawks led the entire second set and capitalized on numerous runs, taking a 25-18 No.2 set win.
- The Zips dominated in the third, hitting .483 on 29 swings, while holding the RedHawks to a .179 hitting percentage. The Zips finished with six blocks with Johnson and Kelly earning a pair each. An attack error on the RedHawks and a kill by Adleta solidified the No. 3 set for the Zips.
- Akron led by as many as 20-13 in the fourth set and would close out the No.4 victory on a 5-0 run. The Zips hit .483 percent with Ochaya leading the way with 10 kills.
- After trailing the RedHawks 4-1, Akron capitalized on a 3-0 run to take its first lead of the set, 11-10. The Zips would score the next four points to seal the set and match.
Akron returns home next week for games with Ball State and Toledo. On Friday, Oct. 8, the Zips will host the Cardinals in the JAR at 7 p.m., while Akron will face Toledo the following day, Saturday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m.
