Akron Announces 2021 Spring Men’s Soccer Schedule

2021 AKRON MEN'S SOCCER SPRING SCHEDULE
AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron men's soccer team unveiled a challenging 2021 spring slate, one that will see the Zips face four opponents from the 2019 NCAA Tournament field, eighth-year head coach Jared Embick announced today.
In 2021, the Zips' 14-match slate features a double round-robin Mid-American Conference schedule, as well as non-conference showdowns at Pittsburgh (Feb. 20) and Kentucky (Feb. 25) as well as home tilts versus Marshall (March 2) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (March 25).
Due to current university COVID-19 protocols, family members and friends of the players and coaches, as well as fans, will not be permitted to attend on-campus events, including Akron men's soccer games until further notice.
The University of Akron is following the Summit County Stay at Home Health Advisory issued by Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro and Summit County Health Commissioner Donna Skoda.
The University continues to work closely with state and local health officials on protocols for hosting events and make appropriate adjustments throughout the coming weeks. Akron is set to return seven starters in 2020, including 2019 All-MAC performers, juniors Colin Biros (Jackson, Ohio) and Carlo Ritaccio (Westbury, N.Y.) from a squad that captured the 2019 Mid-American Conference regular season title.
The Zips are slated to open their regular season campaign traveling to Pittsburgh to battle the Panthers on Feb. 20, before Marshall comes to FirstEnergy Stadium for Akron's home opener on March 2.
The month of March also includes home league contests versus Bowling Green (March 7), Western Michigan (March 21) and SIU Edwardsville (March 28).
The Zips welcome Northern Illinois to Akron on April 4, while closing out their regular season home campaign welcoming West Virginia to FirstEnergy Stadium on April 7.
The Zips will take the field for the first time on Feb. 7 when Akron travels to Pittsburgh, Pa., to square off against Villanova in the first of two exhibition tilts. The Zips will also host Dayton at FirstEnergy Stadium on Feb. 12.
Akron has met Villanova one time in program history, with the Zips posting a 2-0 home triumph past the Wildcats in the opening round of the 2016 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship.
Akron leads the all-time series with Dayton, 10-1, as the Zips earned a 1-0 victory over the Flyers in the last regular season encounter between the two schools during the 2002 campaign.
The Zips open their 66th season of intercollegiate soccer battling Pittsburgh for the fourth consecutive season, the Zips travel to face a Panthers' squad that went 7-1-0 (4-0-0 ACC) during the fall 2020 campaign, a mark that included victories over nationally-ranked Notre Dame and Virginia. Pittsburgh earned a 1-0 home victory over Akron on Sept. 16, 2019. The Panthers advanced to the second round of the 2019 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship, including a 2-0 victory over Lehigh.
The Zips then travel to Lexington, Ky., to battle Kentucky on Thursday, Feb. 25. The Wildcats posted a 5-1 mark during the fall 2020 campaign after advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2019 on the strength of a 13-5-3 mark. Kentucky opened the NCAA Tournament with a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Loyola of Chicago, before dropping a second-round decision at Indiana.
The Zips open their home slate welcoming Marshall to FirstEnergy Stadium on March 2 for the 11th all-time meeting between the two programs. The 11th-seeded Thundering Herd advanced to the third round of the 2019 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship, including earning a 2-1 triumph over West Virginia.
Akron opens up defense of its 2019 MAC regular season crown on March 7 as Bowling Green invades FirstEnergy Stadium. The Zips registered a 2-1 home triumph past the Falcons on Oct. 12, 2019, before Bowling Green avenged the regular season loss handing Akron a 1-0 setback in the semifinals of the 2019 MAC Championship.
The 2021 MAC spring schedule will consist of double round-robin format with each team playing home and away contests versus the other five league schools.
The Zips continue league play with a two-game road swing at Northern Illinois (March 14) and SIU Edwardsville (March 17).
Akron bested the Huskies, 3-2, on Senior Night on Nov. 2, 2019, while registering a 3-0 victory over the Cougars on Oct. 25, 2019.
Akron returns home to host Western Michigan (March 22), Saint Francis (March 25), SIU Edwardsville (March 28) before closing out the month of March at West Virginia (March 31).
The Zips battled the Broncos to a 1-1 double-overtime draw in their last meeting on Oct. 20, 2019, while Akron secured the 2019 MAC regular season championship with a 1-0 victory at West Virginia on Nov. 7, 2019.
The Zips open the month of April hosting Northern Illinois at FirstEnergy Stadium on April 4 before playing their regular season home finale against West Virginia on April 7.
Akron wraps up the regular season with road tests at Bowling Green and Western Michigan on April 11 and 18, respectively.
The MAC regular season conference champion will receive the league's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Championship.
The NCAA Men's Soccer Championship play is set to commence in late April and will culminate May 13-17 at the College Cup in Cary, N.C.
