Akron Set to Host Tri-Meet with Buffalo and Kent State

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams continue their indoor campaigns this Friday as the Zips welcome Buffalo and Kent State to the Stile Athletics Field House for a tri-meet on Friday, Jan. 22.
The 28-event meet will kick off with the women's pole vault and weight throw in addition to the men's high jump and long jump at 5 p.m. The 16-event running competition commences with the men's mile at 6 p.m. before the women's 4x400 relay closes action at 8:40 p.m.
The meet will be scored as a tri-meet: 7-5-4-3-2-1 (Individual Events, 2 score per team), 7-5-4 (Relay Events, 1 score per team).

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2020 indoor season as the Zips were rated in the Event Squad rankings released on March 3, 2020 as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron ranked third nationally in the men's triple jump and among the top 20 in six different events.
The Zips also rated sixth in the men's heptathlon, seventh in the men's 400 meters, eighth in the men's 200 meters, 16th in the men's long jump and 20th in the men's pole vault.
The Akron men and women ranked fifth and ninth, respectively, in the Great Lakes Regional polls.
The Zips' men's squad ranked No. 4 in the final Collegiate Indoor Dual Meet Rankings as compiled by Jesse Squire for Track and Field News.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2021 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has seven student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the 2021 indoor campaign, including junior Nuh Andu (Doha, Qatar), who is eighth in the nation in the men's high jump (6-11.50/2.12m).
Also rated among the top-25 is junior Amir Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) (11th in the men's 60 meters – 6.73; 14th in the men's 200 meters – 21.38), sophomore Zarik Brown (Dayton, Ohio) (12th in the men's 400 meters – 47.23), freshman Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) (14th in the men's pole Vault – 17-0.75/5.20m), junior Jacqueline Pokuaah (Akron, Ohio) (14th in the women's long jump – 19-10.75/6.06m), sophomore Blake Lucius (Crestline, Ohio) (23rd in the men's 800 meters – 1:53.97) and redshirt junior Abby Helminiak (Toledo, Ohio) (25th in the women's pole Vault – 13-0.25/3.97m)
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips posted a pair of top-five performances in program history during Akron's season-opening efforts a week ago at the Akron Quad on Jan. 15.
Amir Willis captured a pair of sprints for the Zips recording the fifth-fastest time in Akron indoor history in the men's 60 meters crossing the line in 6.73, before taking the men's 200 meters in a time of 21.38.
Jacqueline Pokuaah headlined the field in the women's long jump with a career-best mark of 19-10.75 (6.06m), the fifth-longest jump in indoor program history. She later won the women's 200 meters in a career-best time 25.05 after placing second in the women's 60 meters with a time of 7.60.
A WEEK AGO: The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2021 indoor campaign registering 15 victories as part of 29 overall top-three performances at the Akron Quad at the Stile Athletics Field House on Friday, Jan. 15.
The Zips bested the field in the men's competition as Akron registered 167 points to edge Eastern Michigan (131.50), Buffalo (78.50) and Kent State (68). In the women's field, the Eagles led the field with 159 points, followed by Akron (118.50), Kent State (60.50) and Buffalo (56).

Abby Helminiak earned her first-ever victory in the women's pole vault eclipsing 13-0.25 (3.97m), while freshman Hunter Garretson and sophomore Sebastian Martin the top-two spots in the men's pole vault eclipsing 17-0.75 (5.20m) and 16-0.75 (4.90m), respectively.
The Zips claimed the top-two spots in the men's long jump as sophomore Dimitrije Novakovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and freshman Christian Mayfield (University Heights, Ohio) registered marks of 23-6 (7.16m) and 22-6.50 (6.87m). Novakovic went on to win the men's triple jump with a mark of 46-5.25 (14.15m), while Mayfield placed second with a career-best mark of 45-4.25 (13.82m).
Senior Andre Bollam-Godbott (Brunswick, Ohio) captured the men's mile in a time of 4:12.93, while sophomore Sophia Leto (Mt. Orab, Ohio) placed second in the women's mile in a career-best time of 5:18.58.
Nuh Andu triumphed in the men's high jump with a clearance of 6-11.50 (2.12m).
Brown crossed the line first in the men's 400 meters in a time of 47.23, while freshman Janay Bass (Akron, Ohio) placed second in the women's 400 meters in a career-best time of 58.26.
Blake Lucius and junior Oliver Huffman (Augusta, Ga.) went 1-2 in the men's 800 meters crossing the line in 1:53.97 and 1:55.39, respectively.
Junior Kyra Keurentjes (Wehl, The Netherlands) registered a career-best time of 2:14.03 to earn the victory in the women's 800 meters, while junior Lizzy Gurko (Northfield, Ohio) crossed the line second in 2:15.08. Gurko later went on to capture the women's 3,000 meters in a time of 10:32.75.
The Zips' 4x400 relay team of Bass, junior Sara Foster (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), Keurentjes and freshman Sage Harmon (Bloomsburg, Pa.) finished second in a time of 3:57.92.
A YEAR AGO: The University of Akron's Lucy Bryan won the women's pole vault eclipsing 14-7.25 (4.45m) to direct the Zips to a pair of dual-meet victories over Kent State on Jan. 24, 2020, at the Kent State Field House.
The Akron men's and women's track and field teams combined to win 19 events on the evening, while placing second in an additional 14 to best Kent State.
In the men's dual meet, Akron bettered the Golden Flashes, 84-67, while the Zips' women's squad edged Kent State, 86-65.
Demetrius Jackson earned a pair of victories on the evening posting winning times of 6.81 and 21.19 in the 60 and 200 meters, respectively.
Junior Zoi Balamouti (Heraklion, Greece) captured the women's triple jump with the then fifth-best mark in indoor program history soaring 40-1.25 (12.22m).
Senior Lindsey Scarton (Berea, Ohio) kicked off the running portion of the meet for Akron women's team winning the women's mile in a time of 5:01.53.
Andre Bollam-Godbott opened the evening on the track for the Zips' men's team capturing the victory in the men's mile in a time of 4:11.67, before placing second in the men's 800 meters in a time of 1:55.04.
Senior Patrick Kimball (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won the men's 60-meter hurdles in 8.11, before Zarik Brown bested the field in the men's 400 meters crossing the line in a career-best time of 48.01.
Bailey Lack captured the women's 400 meters in a time of 58.12, before anchoring the winning women's 4x400 relay squad of Dimitra Gnafaki, Iman Batiste, Sara Foster and Lack, which recorded a time of 3:57.04.
Sophomore Makenna Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) bested the field in the women's 800 meters in a time of 2:14.90.
Blake Lucius triumphed in the men's 800 meters in a time of 1:54.74.
Lizzy Gurko won the women's 3,000 meters crossing the line first in a time of 10:18.50.
Marc Migliozzi registered the victory in the men's 3,000 meters with a time of 8:24.81.
The men's 4x400 relay squad of Amir Willis, redshirt sophomore Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio), Brown and redshirt junior Garrett White (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) crossed the line first in a time of 3:19.05.
Senior Hesham Eldesouky (Nasr City, Egypt) registered a mark of 48-2.75 (14.70m) to triumph in the men's triple jump, while placing second in the long jump with a mark of 24-5.50 (7.45m).
Junior Kassandra Roemer (Kaiserlautern, Germany) recorded a mark of 18-7.75 (5.68m) to triumph in the women's long jump.
Shawnn Foster capped the evening for the Zips winning the women's weight throw with a career-best mark of 59-9.50 (18.22m).
