AKRON, Ohio –University of Akron head baseball coach Chris Sabo has announced the additions of Cory Mee and Conner Faix to coaching staff.
Â
"I'm extremely fortunate and excited to add two dynamic coaches to the Akron baseball staff for the 2020-21 season," head coach Chris Sabo said.
Â
Mee was named associate head coach and recruiting coordinator while Faix will serve as pitching coach and assistant recruiting coordinator for the Zips.
Â
"Cory has had a great deal of success both as a player and as a coach. He was a very fine player out of Notre Dame who also had great success as the head baseball coach of Toledo for almost two decades. Cory's knowledge and attention to detail will be extremely beneficial moving forward for our student-athletes success.
Â
Mee brings 27 years of Division I coaching experience to the staff, including 17 years in the Mid-American Conference. He was the head coach at Toledo for 16 seasons and an assistant at Eastern Michigan for one. Mee has also made stops at Notre Dame and Michigan State.
Â
Mee's tenure at Toledo was highlighted by the 2012 MAC West Division Championship, 10 appearances in the MAC tournament, and a school-record 195 MAC wins. Mee was named MAC Coach of the Year in 2010 after leading UT to a record of 34-22, the program's first 30-win season since 1999, as well as a 19-8 record in conference play. The 2010 squad posted the best offensive numbers in UT history, setting school records in hits, doubles, runs scored, RBIs, and slugging percentage. The .328 batting average compiled by the squad ranks second-best in school history.
Â
"Connor is a local product and most recently coached at Campbell University," Sabo said. "He brings knowledge, enthusiasm and a great work ethic to our program. Our pitching staff is very fortunate to have a fine young coach and man working with them this year."
Â
Faix joins the Akron coaching staff after serving as the volunteer assistant at Campbell University in The Big South Conference for the shortened 2020 season due to COVID-19. At Campbell, Faix assisted with the development of the pitching staff while coordinating camps.
Â
Prior to his stop at Campbell, Faix served as pitching coach at NCAA DII member Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa. He helped lead the Lakers to the semifinals of the 2019 NCAA DII College World Series, the program's furthest postseason finish in school history.
The Zips are scheduled to open the 2021 season in early March.
