AKRON, Ohio - We continue updates from across country and the world in what we like to call Postcards from The Zips. Up next, from men's soccer is Akron junior Sam Tojaga (Erie, Pa.).
Â
First off, are you and your family doing well?
Â
My family and I are doing well. We are trying to make the most of this odd circumstance, while staying safe and healthy.
Â
With time for reflection have you been able to wrap your head around what has occurred?
Â
I have been able to wrap my head around it, but it truly is a crazy situation. Once I stepped back and thought about it, I realized this is something we will talk about for years to come.
Â
Talk about the importance of your family and knowing that they are safely back home?
Â
I think it is really important to be around your family during a time like this. I know in my case, but especially my international teammates. It would be really hard knowing that you are away from your family during the early stages of a pandemic.Â
Â
What is daily life like knowing that you've been expected to stay inside your homes?
Â
The majority of my daily life consists of some type of workout to get me moving a little, getting homework done before the semester ended, watching tv and movies, and playing Xbox. Also, we have done a lot of puzzles and games as a family to pass the time.Â
Â
Discuss your feelings as the events were occurring that ultimately led to the cancellation of spring sports?
Â
In my mind and after following the news, I had that sense of its coming. I knew everything was getting cancelled eventually and it was just a matter of time. It's unfortunate because as a team we always want to make strides on the field and when that is stripped away from us it's going to be tough.Â
Â
Discuss your communication with your teammates around the world and back here in Ohio during this time?
Â
I have been talking to a lot of my teammates since we have all dispersed to our homes. We have a few group messages we actively participate in. Also, some of us had some classes together so, that gave us an opportunity to help each other and to catchup in a group FaceTime setting or something along the lines.Â
Â
Can you describe what it has means to be a Zip, especially during this time?Â
Â
It means a lot to be a Zip during this time. The support and concern from the community, alumni, and fans about our well-being has been great to see. We as a team really feel that support and it reminds us every day what it means to be a Zip.Â
