Akron’s Vasilescu Earns MAC Women’s Tennis Honor

CLEVELAND – University of Akron women's tennis junior Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) captured Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week honors on Wednesday.
Vasilescu went 2-0 on the week at No. 2 singles. In Akron's 4-3 win at Cleveland State, she beat Lara Prosenjak in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. At Marshall, she battled Daniela Dankanych for a 7-6 (2), 7-5 victory.
Vasilescu stands 10-8 in singles action overall, including 4-4 this spring.
The honor is the first singles honor for Vasilescu this spring and the second honor for Akron. The Zips' No. 1 doubles team of senior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and Vasilescu earned the MAC Doubles Team weekly honor on Feb. 19.
This week's tennis matches against Cornell and Binghamton in Ithaca, N.Y., have been cancelled. Under the guidance of interim head coach Brian Peters, Akron is expected to resume action on Sunday, March 22, in the MAC opener at Bowling Green.
