Pikunas, David Earn Wins, Zips Fall 3-2 to Florida Gulf Coast

Lakewood Ranch, Fla. – The Akron Zips women's golf team fell 3-2 to top-seeded Florida Gulf Coast in the semifinal round of the MAC Match Play Challenge at Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club early on Tuesday.

Sophomore Jacinta Pikunas (Youngstown, Ohio) and freshman Jennifer David (Hudson, Ohio) earned wins for the Zips, each moving to 2-0 for the tournament. Pikunas won her match 3&1 over FGCU's Isabella Portokalis, while David used a 2up ledger to defeat Laura Edmonds.

Pikunas and Portokalis battled back-and-forth through the front-9 with six lead changes and four stalemates. Pikunaks held the lead on three of those occasions, taking 1up advantages on holes No. 2, 4 and 8. When Pikunas reestablished herself as the leader on hole No. 8 she never relinquished the lead. She carried a 2up advantage into the back-9. Pikunas increased her lead to as many as 4up before ending the match 3&1 on No. 17.

David and Edmonds halved the initial three holes, but on hole No. 4, David earned a 1up advantage. She won three consecutive holes to push the lead to 3up by hole No. 7 and took a 2up advantage into the back-9. David's advantage dropped to 1up on No. 10, but she maintained the one-hole advantage through No. 15 and increased the lead to 2up on No. 16.

Sophomore Ivana Shah (Mumbai, India) and freshman Jessica Hahn (Canton, Ohio) dropped their matches, 2-down, while freshman Riley Dean (Lewis Center, Ohio) fell by a 4&3 decision. Dean is 1-1 in match play.

Akron will be back in action during the afternoon session against Morehead State as the Zips and the Eagles battle for the third and fourth positions. Once again, Pikunas will get the round started at 12:50 p.m. followed by Dean (12:57), Hahn (1:04), Shah (1:11) and David (1:18).
