Akron Announces Challenging Men’s Soccer Spring Exhibition Slate

AKRON, Ohio - The Akron men's soccer team is set to face a challenging spring exhibition schedule, one that includes four matches at FirstEnergy Stadium, Zips' eighth-year head coach Jared Embick announced on Tuesday.
Akron is set to return eight starters in 2020, including 2019 All-Mid-American Conference performers, senior David Egbo (Enugu, Nigeria) and juniors Colin Biros (Jackson, Ohio) and Carlo Ritaccio (Westbury, N.Y.) from a squad that captured the Mid-American Conference regular season title.
The Zips will open their spring slate traveling to Pittsburgh, Pa., to square off versus the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL (United Soccer League) on Saturday, Feb. 22. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
Akron opens the month of March visiting Penn State for a 3 p.m. showdown against the Nittany Lions on Sunday, March 8. Penn State registered a 12-4-3 mark in 2019, including a 6-1-1 ledger in the Big Ten Conference en route to earning a No. 15 national seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Nittany Lions were edged in overtime, 3-2, by Providence in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Zips travel down I-71 to battle the Columbus Crew Reserves in a closed exhibition tilt on Sunday, March 15 at 12 p.m. The contest with the Crew is a closed scrimmage and spectators will not be permitted to watch the action.
Akron opens its home slate at FirstEnergy Stadium battling Notre Dame College on March 15 at 6 p.m. The Falcons posted a 12-4-2 record a season ago and advanced to the title match of the Mountain East Conference before falling to eventual national champion University of Charleston.
Akron commences competition in April hosting a doubleheader on Saturday, April 4 versus Pittsburgh and Ashland at 3 and 6 p.m., respectively. The Eagles are coached by former Akron assistant coach Oliver Slawson.
The Panthers garnered their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1965 a season ago on the strength of a 10-8-2 record, including a 4-3-1 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Pittsburgh registered a 2-0 triumph over Lehigh in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, before falling to eventual national champion Georgetown in the second round.
The Zips then travel to Lexington, Ky., to battle Kentucky in a 10 a.m. tilt on Saturday, April 11. The Wildcats advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2019 on the strength of a 13-5-3 mark. Kentucky opened the NCAA Tournament with a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Loyola of Chicago, before dropping a second-round decision at Indiana.
Akron concludes its spring campaign on Saturday, April 18, as the Zips host the Vaughan Soccer Club out of Toronto, Ontario, at FirstEnergy Stadium in a 7 p.m. tilt.
All spring exhibition contests at FirstEnergy Stadium are open to the public and free of charge.
