Akron to Unveil All-Decade Men’s Soccer Team

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's soccer program under the direction of head coaches Jared Embick and Caleb Porter achieved new heights for Zips in the decade spanning the years 2010 through this past season, including Akron's first-ever College Cup championship in 2010.
The Zips finished the decade with a mark of 155-45-25 (.744) and earned berths in four College Cups in 2010, 2015, 2017 and 2018, nine NCAA Tournaments, while garnering eight Mid-American Conference regular season titles and eight league tournament crowns.
Darlington Nagbe was honored as the 2010 Hermann Trophy Award winner as the nation's top collegiate player, while 14 players in Chad Barson (2012), Reinaldo Brenes (2013), Scott Caldwell (2011 and 2012), David Egbo (2018), Bryan Gallego (2013), Richie Laryea (2015), Darren Mattocks (2011), David Meves (2012), Joao Moutinho (2017), Nagbe (2010), Adam Najem (2015 and 2016), Aodhan Quinn (2013), Kofi Sarkodie (2010) and Wil Trapp (2012) collected 16 All-America citations.
Twenty-six players were chosen in the MLS SuperDraft, including 12 first-round selections. Joao Moutinho was the No. 1 overall selection of Los Angeles FC in the 2018 SuperDraft after being named the 2017 National Freshman of the Year by TopDrawerSoccer.com.
In honor of the achievements over the decade, the Zips will unveil nominees for each of 11 positions in a 4-3-3 formation over the coming weeks leading up to the announcement of the All-Decade Team prior to Akron's home spring exhibition match versus Pittsburgh at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Fans will be able to vote for one of the four nominees (three goalkeepers) at each position on Twitter polls @ZipsMSOC for a period of 48 hours. Polls are expected to be posted around noon on Monday and Thursday of each week, with this week's nominees being released on Tuesday and Thursday, Feb. 4 and 6, respectively.
