Pikunas Places Third at Rio Verde Invitational, Akron Finishes Fifth

RIO VERDE, Ariz. – Sophomore Jacinta Pikunas (Youngstown, Ohio) placed third overall at the Rio Verde Invitational while leading the Akron Zips women's golf team to a fifth-place finish 309-302-297 - 908 (+44) on Sunday.

Pikunas fired a 2-over par 73-71-74 – 218 tournament total at the Rio Verde Country Club's White Wing Golf Course, a par-72 that stretches 6,242 yards. She opened the 54-hole event with a 1-over ledger on Friday. Saturday's 18-hole round was postponed due to rain, forcing the field to play 36-holes on Sunday.

Pikunas opened the final day of competition with a 1-under par performance. She recorded three birdies with 13 pars and two bogeys to bring her 36-hole total to an even-par 144. In the second 18-hole round of the day, Pikunas posted four birdies with eight pars and six bogeys to finished the tournament with a 2-over ledger. She elevated four spots on the leaderboard for the third-place finish.

Sophomore Ivana Shah (Mumbai, India) followed in scoring for the Zips. Shah placed 18th overall with 76-76-73 – 225 (+9) scores. After an opening round 76 (+4), Shah climbed five spots with 22 pars and five birdies over 36 holes.

Rounding out Akron's scoring were freshmen Jennifer David (Hudson, Ohio), Riley Dean (Lewis Center, Ohio) and Jessica Hahn (Canton, Ohio). David finished tied for 34th place (+14, 230), Dean landed tied in the 50th position (+19, 235) and Hahn placed 82nd (+29, 245).

Arkansas State won the team title with a 299-289-292 - 880 (+16), while the Red Wolves Grayson Gladden and Elise Schultz earned medalist honors (-1, 215) and runner-up (E, 216).

The Zips are scheduled to be back in action at the Spring Break shootout hosted by Western Kentucky and Florida Gulf Coast. The two-day, 54-hole event is slated to be played at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club in Dade City, Fla.
