Akron’s Pedroso & Vasilescu Earn MAC Women’s Tennis Honor

CLEVELAND – Following their first team victory, the University of Akron women's tennis duo of senior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and junior Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) captured Mid-American Conference Doubles Team of the Week honors on Wednesday.
Pedroso and Vasilescu had two victories last week at the No. 1 spot. In Akron's first victory of the spring season, a 7-0 sweep of Seton Hall on Feb. 14, the duo defeated Minja Gligic and Hiba El Khalifi, 6-2.
Against West Virginia on Feb. 16, UA claimed the doubles point with wins at all three spots. At No. 1, Pedroso and Vasilescu beat Anne-Sopie Courteau and Kat Lyman, 6-4.
This spring the tandem stands 2-0 in doubles action, all at the No. 1 spot.
The honor is the first for the Akron this spring. The Zips' No. 1 doubles team earned the MAC weekly honor twice in 2019.
Under the guidance of interim head coach Brian Peters, Akron hosts Illinois State on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 10 a.m. at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
