Akron Swimming Ranked 24th in Country, Opens Season at Eastern Michigan

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips women's swimming and diving opens its season ranked No. 24 by College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) and the Zips are set for their first competition, a dual meet against Eastern Michigan on Friday, Nov. 20, in Ypsilanti, Mich.

In the first official CSCAA Top-25 poll released of the 2020-21 season, the Zips are ranked at No. 24 with 55 points, just one-point behind No. 23 ranked North Carolina. Georgia claimed the top spot of the November rankings with 354 points. The polls are scheduled for release on December 17, January 21, and February 11 (dates are subject to change).

The rankings are voted on by CSCAA-member coaches and select media. Each committee includes nine representatives from the Power Five leagues, five at-large programs, and two media members. The women's and men's committee chairs are Naya Higashijima (SMU) and Bill Roberts (Navy).Â

Akron will begin its pursuit for its eighth consecutive Mid-American Conference championship on Friday, Nov. 20 as the Zips travel to Ypsilanti, Mich., for a dual against Eastern Michigan. The meet is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Jones Natatorium. Per Eastern Michigan University and Mid-American Conference policies, no spectators will be allowed. The Zips and the Eagles last dual meet was Jan. 18, 2020, at Ocasek Natatorium in Akron, Ohio. Akron pulled out the 175-125 victory, snapping a 16-meet losing streak against Eastern Michigan. The Eagles lead the all-time series against the Zips, 16-1. Eastern holds a 9-0 mark at Jones Natatorium against Akron.Â

The Zips' roster consists of 22 returners and six newcomers, including the 2019-20 MAC Most Outstanding Swimmer Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba), the 2019-20 MAC Freshman Swimmer of the Year Weronika Gorecka (Wroclaw, Poland) and three All-Americans on the diving boards in senior Andrea Bugariu (Shelby Township, Mich.), junior Kamryn Goodrick (Chesterland, Ohio) and sophomore Paige Kalik (Irwin, Pa.).

The returning squad also features seven All-MAC performers including a pair of first-team recipients in Watson and senior Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain) along with five second-team members in Gorecka, senior Brooke Lamoureux (Victoria, Canada), junior Andrea Fischer (Oak Grove, Minn.), junior Olivia Gardner (Bromsgrove, England) and junior Sofia Henell (Linkoping, Sweden) from a year ago.
