Thurman Earns MAC Give Back Leadership Award

CLEVELAND, Ohio – University of Akron baseball junior Roy Thurman (Indianapolis, Ind.) has been named student-athlete winner of the Mid-American Conference Give Back Leadership Award for the week of October 12-16, the league announced on Monday.Â
Â
Thurman demonstrated excellence in citizenship and service over the past three weeks to be deserving of this award. As a transfer student, he has proven to be a leader at the University of Akron and a dedicated member of the Zips' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Â
Â
Thurman has used his platform to make a difference in the community surrounding Akron as well as on campus by organizing and participating in several events. Â
Â
In conjunction with student government, Thurman has assisted with promoting mental health awareness month by distributing flyers and food coupons to people affected by the disease. He also reads books for the 2nd & 7 Foundation that will be shown to hundreds of school-aged children all over Northeast Ohio.Â

Additionally, he is a founding member of the new Racial Equity Campus Committee at the University in partnership with the UA Chief of Police Dale Gooding and Dean of Students Mike Strong, and coordinates all volunteerism efforts for the baseball team at the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank as well as the Haven of Rest.Â

The 2020-21 Give Back Leadership Awards are awarded each week to the MAC institution, sport program, or student-athlete that has demonstrated excellence in service and citizenship that week. The three awards will be awarded on a rotating weekly basis, outlined below, and are intended to highlight the activities of MAC members in local communities. Award nominations should highlight the contributions that the institution, sport program, or student-athlete made to the broader community. The winners are selected by a representative of the conference's Faculty Athletics Representatives (FARs).Â
