Field Set for Seventh Annual Akron Pole Vault Convention

AKRON, Ohio – A talented cast – including Olympians, national and world champions and NCAA national champions – will highlight the list of competitors putting their elite skills on display at the seventh annual Pole Vault Convention, hosted by The University of Akron track and field program this Saturday, Jan. 11, at Stile Athletics Field House.
In all, the elite pole vault competition will feature 12 athletes (eight men's competitors and four women's competitors) and is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 cash only. Akron students are free with ZipCard. Tickets can be purchased inside the Recreation and Wellness Center along the ramp to the Field House. Gates open at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The list of men's competitors includes 2016 Olympic finalist, 2015 IAAF World Champion, Canadian record holder, three-time NCAA champion and six-time Akron All-American Shawn Barber as well as Matt Ludwig, a seven-time USTFCCCA All-American and 2017 NCAA Outdoor champion for the Zips.
Akron senior All-American Matt Keim (Bollivar, Ohio), Jason Colwick, Devin King, Deryk Theodore, Cole Wigal and Jacob Wooten, will also comprise the men's field.
Akron standout senior Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England), a five-time USTFCCCA All-America honoree, three-time Mid-American Conference champion and 54th-rated pole vaulter in the world headlines the women's field.
She is joined by a pair of Canadians in Erika Fiedler, who is ranked No. 3 in Canada and placed fifth at 2019 Canadian Outdoor Championships, and Meghan Lim, who owns the No. 11 ranking in Canada.
Akron senior Abby Helminiak (Toledo, Ohio), who garnered second-team All-MAC outdoor honors in 2019 eclipsing 3.87m (12-8 1/4) rounds out the women's field.
Akron's annual Pole Vault Convention is an all-inclusive pole vault experience for athletes, coaches and parents that features classroom sessions, learn-by-doing clinics, and competitions.
A number of the elite competitors will speak to convention participants in an interactive learning opportunity following the conclusion of the elite competitions on Saturday.
The convention, which is the vision of Zips' head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell begins with registration Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Mitchell has coached more than 100 All-American honors during his career, including All-Americans in the pole vault at the University of Texas, University of North Carolina, and University of Akron.
