AKRON, Ohio – In its only action on the week, the University of Akron women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Oakland on Sunday morning at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.
Â
The Zips (0-3 overall) started off strong, claiming the doubles point. At No. 1, juniors Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) and Jemi Aguilar (Weston, Fla.) defeated Ava Thielman and Darya Maltseva, 6-4.
Â
At No. 2, senior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and sophomore Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) took care of Victoria Kurz and Aarja Chakraborty, 6-2.
Â
"I thought our doubles teams played really well," said interim head coach Brian Peters. "We took advantage of the opportunities when they came along. I was very happy with doubles today."
Â
Oakland (1-1 overall) picked up its first win of the season with five singles victories. Akron's sole singles win came at the No. 3 position as Pedroso beat Maltseva in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Â
"I'd like to give Oakland a lot of credit," Peters continued. "They fought really hard, and they played steadier today than we did. Rita played amazingly today. Collectively moving forward, we're learning that this is a team sport. When you're out here fighting, you're not fighting for yourself, but you're fighting for your team." Â
Â
Akron travels to Notre Dame on Friday, Jan. 31, for a 5 p.m. match.
Â
"Starting 0-3 is not ideal, but morale-wise it's high," he said. "We just want to keep improving. Our goal is to peak by the time the MAC season comes along. We're going to learn with every experience, and every team we play can teach us something different."
