Romeo Travis No. 24 Jersey to be Honored

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron athletics department is pleased to announce that former men's basketball all-time great and Akron native Romeo Travis will have his jersey number honored on Friday, March 6, 2020 when the Zips host Kent State – The ceremony will be held prior to the game.

"I am honored, this a great accomplishment," Travis said. "I am grateful for Coach Groce and his staff along with the current athletic administration for making this a realization. I'm proud to be from Akron and represent Akron, the city and university, forever."

Travis – No. 24 – is the 10th player in program history to have his jersey number honored, joining the likes of No. 12 Larry Jenkins, No. 22 Mike Harkins, No. 42 Bill Turner, No. 13 Fritz Nagy, No. 25 Eric McLaughlin, No. 44 Jim Fenton, No. 20 Len Paul, No. 31 Joe Jakubick and No. 55 Alex Adams.

Travis donned the blue and gold from 2004-07 and led the Zips to an 81-42 overall record and 42-25 Mid-American Conference mark. He ranks seventh on the Zips all-time scoring list, recording 1,491 points in 122 games played. In addition, Travis ranks second in blocked shots (165) and ninth all-time in rebounds (783). During his tenure, he earned Associated Press All-American honors, the MAC Player of the Year award and three All-MAC accolades.

As a senior in 2007, Travis averaged 14.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game and garnered several accolades for his dominance in league play, including AP All-America Honorable Mention Honors. Travis was the first player in Akron's Division I era to receive this honor.

In addition, he was the first Zip in program history to be named MAC Player of the Year while being awarded National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 10 Second Team, All-MAC First Team, CollegeInsider.com MAC Player of the Year, CollegeInsider.com Preseason Mid-Major All-American, Preseason All-MAC, MAC East Division Player of the Week (Feb. 26) and MAC All-Tournament Team.

As a junior, Travis led the squad in scoring (13.8 ppg) and in rebounding (6.8 reb/g) while being named First Team All-MAC and Second Team NABC All-District. He was a Second Team All-MAC selection as a sophomore as he led the Zips on the glass, grabbing 215 total rebounds, 7.4 rebounds per game.

Travis continued his basketball career professionally overseas and has traveled the international hoops circuit for more than a decade. In 2018, Travis carried his team, Le Mans Sarthe Basket, to the Ligue Nationale de Basket (LNB) Pro A title—the highest achievement in French basketball. Travis was named All-Israeli League Player of the Year in 2012 and has played in Spain, Croatia, Germany, Russia, Italy and the Philippines.

Travis earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Akron in multidisciplinary studies.
