CHARLESTON, W.Va.– The University of Akron women's tennis team opened the 2019-20 season with a 2-1 doubles win over Youngstown State on the first day of action at the Thunder in the Mountains Tournament, hosted by Marshall and West Virginia.
Mother Nature rained on the parade early in the day, cancelling morning singles and forcing doubles action inside at the YMCA.
At No. 1, senior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and junior Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated Youngstown's Imaan Hassim and Tamara Teufl, 6-4. At No. 2, junior captain Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) and true freshman Aliona Kruglov (Karmiel, Israel) beat out Cassandra Moraleja and Elvira Esteo, 6-4.
Against Toledo, sophomores Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) and Holland Long (Rochester, N.Y.) claimed a 6-1 victory over Laura Morera and Patricia Panta at No. 3.
In singles action against West Virginia at the Schoenbaum Tennis Courts, Rosas defeated Anastasia Bovolskaia, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 5. The top three Zips battled to third set tie-breakers.
"It was nice to get some matches in," said interim head coach Brian Peters. "Today we were able to play both inside as well as outside, and I thought we adjusted well. Ceci and Holland played great singles matches after doubles, and we also lost a few tie-breakers. Our spirit is high; we are playing hard and ready for day two!"
Play continues on Saturday, Sept. 21, and Sunday, Sept. 22. Live scoring updates will be available online.
