Akron Men's Golf 2019-20 Schedule
Akron, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's golf team is set to compete in four fall tournaments, including its Firestone Invitational, head coach David Trainor announced on Tuesday.
"We are excited to get the 2019-20 season started," Trainor said. "We play a tough schedule that features great competition on some of the best courses. Every year it's our goal to play in difficult and challenging events and this schedule accomplishes that objective. We have a few weeks to prepare for our first tournament [the Battle at Briar's Creek], and I look forward to getting the team ready to compete."
The Zips are slated to open the 2019-20 season in Johns Island, S.C. on Sept. 8-10 at the Battle at Briars Creek. The College of Charleston hosts the tournament which is slated to be played at The Club at Briar's Creek.
Akron's second event of the season will be held at the world-famous Firestone Country Club. The Zips are coming off their first Firestone Invitational win and look to defend the title at the annual tournament on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 in Akron, Ohio.
The Zips also familiar with the final two events of the fall as they return to the Mountaineer and the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate tournaments. West Virginia host the Mountaineer Intercollegiate at Pete Dye course in Bridgeport, W. Va. on Oct. 7-8.
The Final tournament of the fall schedule is Old Dominion's ODU/OBX Intercollegiate in Outer Banks, N.C. on Oct. 20-22. The three-day, 72-hole event is scheduled to be played at the Kilmarlic Golf Course.
The Zips return six players and added two freshmen for the 2019-20 campaign. Senior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) posted a third-best 75.44 stroke average and finished 11th overall at last season's Mountaineer Intercollegiate.
The junior class is headlined by Fabian Sunden (Sweden) and Kaleb Smith (Mansfield, Ohio). Sunden finished last season strong, placing 21st and 22nd overall in the final two events and finished the year with a 75.95 stroke average, while Smith appeared in four events and fired a 71 (-1) in the Zips win at the Firestone Invitational.
Sophomores Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain) and Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) were among the Zips top scorers a year ago. Puente posted a second-best 75.42 stroke average and Bayerl followed with a fourth-best 75.74 average.
Returning as a redshirt freshman is Cade Kreps (Boardman, Ohio). He joins the incoming freshman class of Quinn Patterson (Columbus, Ohio) and Braden Smith (Sterling, Ohio), whom will all be making their collegiate debuts.
