NORMAN, Okla. – For the fifth straight year, an Akron men's golfer was named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar as junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) earned the prestigious honor, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced on Wednesday.
Â
"I am extremely proud of Mitchell and how he represents the Akron Zips men's golf program," Zips' ninth-year head coach David Trainor said. "He worked extremely hard this year, and this honor is a culmination of that hard work, both in the classroom and on the course."
McFarland marks the 16th recipient of this award in Akron's program history and 11th under Trainor in eight seasons. In addition, McFarland collected Mid-American Conference All-Academic awards in 2018 and 2019.
Â
McFarland makes his first appearance as an All-America Scholar as a public relations major. He maintained a 3.594 overall GPA with one appearance on the Dean's List.
Â
McFarland earned his first All-America Scholar as a political science major. He made two appearances on the Dean's List this academic year and appeared on the list every semester of his academic career (six times). McFarland maintains a 3.649 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
Â
On the course, McFarland played in all 10 events for the Zips and posted a third-best 75.44 stroke average. He fired three rounds of par or better with a low-round 70 (-2) at Akron's Firestone Invitational that helped lead the Zips to their first-ever Firestone Invitational Championship. McFarland posted two Top 25 performances and carded a season low 217 (+1) tournament total while leading the Zips scoring efforts three times.
A total of 266 Division I men's golfers received the honor as the GCAA named 540 student-athletes from all divisions, the most since the awards inception in 1982. To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50 percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
