McFarland, Sunden, Bayerl Earn MAC All-Academic Honors

Cleveland, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's golf team placed three golfers on the Mid-American Conference All-Academic team as junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), sophomore Fabian Sunden (Sweden), and redshirt freshman Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) earned Academic All-MAC honors, the league announced Monday.
"Our entire team works hard in the classroom and does very well academically. To be great in the classroom and on the golf course is simply fantastic," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. "Mitchell, Fabian, and Beau have done extremely well in the classroom, and they are to be commended for their hard work. I am extremely proud of them and their efforts."
A total of 30 student-athletes were named to this year's All-MAC squad as McFarland collected the award for the second-straight year while Sunden and Bayerl makes their first appearance.
McFarland, a political science major, makes his second appearance as an Academic All-MAC honoree. He made two appearances on the Dean's List this academic year and appeared on the list every semester of his academic career (six times). McFarland maintains a 3.649 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
McFarland played in all 10 events for the Zips and posted a third-best 75.44 stroke average. He fired three rounds of par or better with a low-round 70 (-2) at Akron's Firestone Invitational that helped lead the Zips to their first-ever Firestone Invitational Championship. McFarland posted two Top 25 performances and carded a season low 217 (+1) tournament total while leading the Zips scoring efforts three times.
Sunden makes his first Academic All-MAC appearance as a corporate finance major. He maintained a 3.621 overall GPA with two appearances on the Dean's List this year, and three for his career.
Sunden played in 8-of-10 events for the Zips and posted a 75.95 stroke average. He fired three rounds of par or better with a low-round 68 (-3). Sunden posted two Top 25 performances, including a 22nd overall finish at the MAC Championships and registered a season low 219 (+3) ledger at Akron's Firestone Invitational that helped lead the Zips to their first-ever Firestone Invitational Championship.
Rounding out the Academic All-MAC selections was Bayerl. He makes his first appearance as a top academic performer with a 3.651 GPA in statistics and applied math.
Bayerl played in all 10 events for the Zips and posted a 75.74 stroke average. He led the Zips scoring in three tournaments and fired five rounds of par or better with a low-round 66 (-5). Bayerl posted four Top 25 performances, including a team-best 9th overall finish at the MAC Championships and registered a season low 216 (E) ledger at Akron's Firestone Invitational.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
