A Trio of League Titles Highlight Zips' Efforts on Day Two of MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

MUNCIE, Ind. – University of Akron senior Mackenzie Andrews (Toowoomba, Australia) garnered her fourth career Mid-American Conference title winning the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase to headline a trio of Zips earning individual league championships on the second day of the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Ball State on Friday, May 10.
Andrews' efforts catapulted the Akron women's squad atop the team standings with 68 points following the second day of competition, while the men's team sits in second place with 56 points. The Zips lead Central Michigan in women's race by 13 points, while Akron trails Kent State by five points in the men's standings.
Senior Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio) captured his sixth overall and fifth consecutive (indoor and outdoor) league title in the men's long jump on the strength of a winning jump and facility-record mark of 25-7.50 (7.81m). The victory marked the fifth consecutive year in which a Zip has won the league's outdoor title in the men's long jump.
Andrews became only the second Zip to win the steeplechase in championship history, as she crossed the line flashing her Akron 'Z' in a time of 10:26.74. She joins Cassandra Schenck, who won the event in 2008 and 2011. Making the victory even sweeter for Andrews was a late surge by junior Haley Hess (Curtice, Ohio) to earn a second-place finish on the strength of the third-fastest performance in outdoor program history, 10:31.05, a career-best time.
Freshman Sara Foster (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) garnered her first-ever MAC title in the women's heptathlon using a strong second-day surge to register a seven-event cumulative and career-best score of 4,808. She earned the fourth consecutive and ninth overall title in the women's heptathlon for the Zips.
Foster registered a mark of 17-6.25 (5.34m) to begin final-day action in the women's heptathlon finishing fifth in the long jump, before tallying a mark of 81-2 (24.73m) in the javelin.
Foster capped her efforts in the heptathlon turning in a career-best time of 2:21.20 in the 800 meters to cement her title in the event.
Senior Abigale Wilson (Carrollton, Ohio) earned second-team All-MAC honors in the women's shot put for the second consecutive year recording a season-best mark of 51-6.25 (15.70m) to place second. Senior Olivia Snyder (Navarre, Ohio) garnered team points in the event finishing sixth with a mark of 49-9.25 (15.17m).
Sparked by a strong second-day performance in the men's decathlon junior Brandon Hochbein (Sarver, Pa.) registered a career-best 10-event cumulative score of 6,771 to garner a career-best second-place finish. Senior Kamar Majid (Akron, Ohio) capped his Akron outdoor career placing third in the event with a score of 6,760, while redshirt junior Malik Hudson (Cleveland, Ohio) also added a team point on the strength of a 5,979 total.
Hochbein opened second-day action in the men's decathlon running a career-best time of 15.05 in the men's 110-meter hurdles to place third, while Majid and Hudson crossed the line in 15.16 and 15.86, respectively.
Majid paced the Zips in the discus with a throw of 128-10 (39.28m), while Hochbein recorded a career-best mark of 115-11 (35.09m) and Hudson a mark of 107-7 (32.79m).
Hochbein directed Akron in the pole vault eclipsing 14-1.25 (4.30m) to place fourth, while Majid finished fifth with a mark of 13-5.25 (4.10m).
Majid captured the javelin with a mark of 167-2 (50.96m), while Hochbein posted the third-best mark of 163-1 (49.70m).
In the finale of the decathlon, Hochbein garnered second-team All-MAC honors crossing the line fourth in the 1,500 meters in a time of 5:01.47. Majid and Hudson recorded times of 5:15.37 and 5:17.60 to round out the competition.
Redshirt sophomore Nick Stricklen (Lexington, Ohio) turned in the third-fastest performance in outdoor program history in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase crossing the line in a career-best time of 9:06.01 to finish fourth and add valuable team points.
Redshirt sophomore Hesham Eldesouky (Nasr City, Egypt) equaled a career-best mark of 24-1.50 (7.35m) to earn a fifth-place performance in the men's long jump, while freshman Bobby Casey (Mayfield, Ohio) established a career-best jump of 23-1.75 (7.05m) to place ninth.
Senior Dara Perry (Akron, Ohio) will go for her fourth career league crown after posting a time of 13.50 in the preliminary round of the women's 100-meter hurdles. Joining her in the final on the strength of a time of 13.92 is freshman Victoria Abunaw (Maumee, Ohio), while freshman Jasmyn Allen (Twinsburg, Ohio) added a career-best time of 14.36 to finish 13th.
Redshirt freshman Noah Williams (Hilton, N.Y.) ran the fastest preliminary time in the men's 400 meters crossing the line in 46.29, just one one-hundredths of a second shy of equaling his school-record time of 46.28 set on April 27. Freshman Zach Robinson (Pickerington, Ohio) will also vie for the league title in the event after placing eighth with a qualifying time of 49.02. Freshman Sam Janson (Dayton, Ohio) rounded out the Zips' efforts posting a time of 49.50 to place 12th.
Qualifying for the finals of the men's 100 meters freshmen Demetrius Jackson (Beachwood, Ohio) and Malcom Briley (Pickerington, Ohio). Jackson recorded a career-best time of 10.71 to place fourth, while Briley turned in the sixth-fastest time of 10.72.
Redshirt freshman Jacob Hutcherson (Uniontown, Ohio) placed 10th in the men's hammer (155-4/47.34m) and 12th in the men's shot put (45-8/13.92m), while redshirt freshman Milton Wilson (Streetsboro, Ohio) posted a mark of 130-6 (39.77m) to finish 12th in the men's hammer.
Freshman Lizzy Gurko (Northfield, Ohio) ran a career-best time of 2:15.01 in the qualifying round of the women's 800 meters, while sophomore Leah Recker (Findlay, Ohio) added a season-best time of 2:15.66.
The final day of the championship kicks off on Saturday, May 11, with the men's discus at 11 a.m. The first running event is slated to begin at 1 p.m. with the women's 4x100 relay.
