Akron Finishes Runner-Up, Four Zips Land in Top 25

Malvern, Pa. – The Akron Zips men's golf team finished runner-up at the Wildcat Spring Invitational as a result of four Top 25 performances and an 8-under par 560 tournament total.

Akron fired a 286 (+2) final round en route to the second-place finish. The Zips opened the 36-hole event at the White Manor Country Club, a par 71 course that spans 6,733 yards, with a 10-under 274 score.

Redshirt freshmen Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) led Akron while finishing tied for seventh overall. Bayerl posted rounds of 66 (-5) and 73 (+2) for a 3-under par 139 score. He carded 11 par scores and six birdies with only one bogey in round one and finished the two-day tournament with seven birdies, five pars, four bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey.

Senior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) and freshman Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain) followed in scoring with a pair of 11th-place finishes and 2-under par 140 scores. Grayson posted rounds of 68 (-3) and 72 (+1) for the under-par result, while Puente posted the same scores but on opposite rounds. For the tournament, Grayson carded 21 pars, seven birdies, seven bogeys and an eagle, while Puente recorded 16 pars, 12 birdies, six bogeys and two double bogeys, including an eight birdie performance during the final round.

Rounding out the Top 25 performers was sophomore Fabian Sunden (Sweden). Sunden finished 21st overall with an even-par 142 ledger. He opened the event with a 68 (-3) score followed by a 74 (+3) score.

Junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) wrapped-up the Zips' scoring with a par of 73 (+2) scores for a 146 (+4) total.

Drexel claimed the team title with a 17-under par 551 team tally, while Drexel's Connor Schmidt earned individual medalist honors with an 11-under par 131 total.

The Zips will be back in action at the Mid-American Conference Tournament at Club Walden Club in Aurora, Ohio on Thursday-Sunday, April 25-28.
