AURORA -Â The Akron Zips men's golf team used a 1-under par 287 second round to climb for spots on the leaderboard as freshmen Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) and senior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) carded 1-under par 71 scores Saturday afternoon.

Bayerl leads the Zips' scoring and ranks tied for ninth overall individually. On the second 18-hole run, he moved up nine spots and recorded 11 pars, four birdies and three bogeys. Bayerl opened the day with a 77 (+5), bringing his tournament total to 148 (+4).

Grayson bounced back from a 79 (+7) start with a 1-under par 71 tally. He collected 13 pars, four birdies and three bogeys. Grayson elevated 12 spots on the player leaderboard, moving from tied for 30th to tied at 18th overall with a 150 (+6) ledger.

Freshman Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain) also moved up the leaderboard after a solid start. He climbed five spots, entering the final round tied at 13th with a 149 (+5) effort. Puente followed a team-leading 77 (+5) first round with an even-par 72. He carded 13 pars and three birdies in the nightcap.

Sophomore Fabian Sunden (Sweden) and junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), rounded out the team scoring, both holding the same ranking as the end of round one. Sunden is tied at 22nd overall with 78-73 – 151 (+7) while McFarland is still 40th with an 83-76 – 159 (+15) tournament total.

Akron is currently one stroke behind third-place Toledo (+6, 303-294 - 597), and the Zips are scheduled to tee off at 8:30 a.m. as McFarland will get the Zips started followed by Sunden (8:40), Puente (8:50), Grayson (9:00) and Bayerl (9:10) on Sunday.

Kent State overcame a six stroke deficit in round two, tying Eastern Michigan for the top slot with a pair of 581 (+5) scores.
