Akron Women’s Tennis Wins at Ball State, 4-3; Awaits MAC Championship Seeding

MUNCIE, Ind. – The University of Akron women's tennis team captured its 20th win in the regular-season finale with a 4-3 win at Ball State in Mid-American Conference play on Saturday afternoon at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
The Zips (20-5 overall, 5-2 MAC) clinched a spot in the 2019 MAC Women's Tennis Championship to be held April 26-28 in Buffalo, N.Y. Seeding will be announced on Sunday, April 21, after all regular-season MAC play has concluded.
"Fantastic effort today from the entire team," said ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett. "Doubles was huge once again, and this group fought through and pulled it out. I'm extremely proud of how we finished the conference regular season. Sophia finishing the conference season undefeated in singles is amazing, and I couldn't be more proud of her. We are excited for the upcoming tournament."
UA started out strong against the Cardinals (15-5 overall, 4-3 MAC), earning the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 2.
At No. 1 for the Zips, junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated Peyton Gollhofer and Victoria Sec, 6-3.
With doubles action tied at one match each, the double point came down to action at No. 2. Redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany and sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) saved two match points and came back to take a 7-5 victory over Audrey Berger and Rebecca Herrington, giving UA the doubles point.
Akron recorded victories in three singles matches.
At. No. 1, Geier registered the 104th victory of her collegiate career with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 victory over Berger. The Zips' leader is 27-4 overall, 19-1 this spring, and a perfect 7-0 in MAC play.
At No. 2, Vasilescu beat Gollhofer, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
At No. 3, Uljanov battled Sarah Swiderski to a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win.
