TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team dropped its first match in Mid-American Conference play with a 4-3 loss at Toledo on Saturday afternoon at the Twos Athletic Club.
"Credit to Toledo for playing a great match," said ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett. "Unfortunately, we didn't play at the level that we are used to, and we certainly didn't get the type of effort that we needed to be successful in the end. We have to have every player be willing to put forth full effort and play with a positive attitude and play for their teammates in order to win in this conference. Nothing less is acceptable."
Toledo (10-6 overall, 2-1 MAC) won the doubles point over the Zips (17-4 overall, 2-1 MAC) with wins at No. 2 and 3, snapping UA's nine-match win streak.
At No. 1, junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated Deedee Leenabanchong and Kokoro Chishaki, 6-2.
"Third doubles was much better today, and they played well enough to win."
Akron claimed victories in the three matches.
At. No. 1, redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) beat Leenabanchong in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
At No. 2, Vasilescu defeated def. Eileen Carney, 6-3, 6-2.
At No. 5, Pedroso battled Thalita Rodrigues to a 6-2, 7-6 (3) victory.
"Miruna, Rita, and Sophia continue to play impressive singles for us, and it was good to see Miruna and Rita get back on track in doubles."
Akron closes out play at home on Friday, April 5, with a 1 p.m. match against Northern Illinois at the LaTuchie Tennis Center. The Seniors will be honored during a pregame ceremony.
