Akron Women’s Tennis Closes Home Play with 7-0 Sweep of NIU

AKRON, Ohio – In its home finale, the University of Akron women's tennis team swept Northern Illinois, 7-0, in Mid-American Conference play on Friday afternoon at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.
The three members of the Senior Class– Luisa Echeverry (Cali Colombia), Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico), and Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany)– were honored prior to the match.
"Great senior day today," said ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett. "It was wonderful seeing all three seniors play at a high level in their final home match. I'm excited to see how we play on Sunday against a very strong Western Michigan team."
The Zips (18-4 overall, 3-1 MAC) won the doubles point against the Huskies (5-13 overall, 0-5 MAC) the with wins at No. 1 and 2. Play at No. 3 stopped once the point was clinched.
At No. 1, junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated Jovana Peric and Paula Veyhle, 6-1.
At No. 2, redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier and sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) beat Brodie Walker and Fernanda Naves, 6-1.
Akron claimed victories in all six singles matches.
At. No. 1, Geier registered the 101st victory of her collegiate career with a win over Peric. Geier won the first set, 6-0, and was ahead in the second, 1-0, when Peric retired due to injury.
At No. 2, Vasilescu beat Walker in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
At No. 3, Uljanov battled Veyhle, 7-6 (2), 6-1.
At No. 4, Pedroso defeated Naves, 6-1, 6-4.
At No. 5, Echeverry beat Lara Slisko, 6-0, 6-2.
At No. 6, freshman Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) defeated Julia Dmitrieva, 7-5, 6-2.
On Sunday, April 7, Akron visits Western Michigan at 1 p.m. at the Sorensen Courts (outside) or West Hills Athletic Club (inside).
