Akron Stands Second After Day One at National Invitational Championship

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The University of Akron women's swimming and diving team stands in second place after the first day of competition at the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) National Invitational Championship hosted by Cleveland State at Robert F. Busbey Natatorium on Thursday evening.Â
The NIC is an event for those Division I swimmers and divers that have achieved B/Zone standards who but are not selected for the NCAA Division I Championships. Akron has 12 swimmers competing at the meet, three of which placed in the top four in their respective events.Â
After the first day of competition, Akron stands in second place with 190 points. Rice University is in first place with 207 points, while Oakland ranks third with 149.5 points. California Baptist University is leading the men's competition with 269.5 points.Â
The Zips started the evening taking first in the 200 freestyle relay out 32 teams. The Akron squad of freshman Avery Movold (Prince George, British Colombia), junior Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio), freshman Lauren Cooper (Dublin, Ohio) and junior Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.) turned in a time of 1:31.70.Â
Freshman Andrea Fischer (St. Paul, Minn.) swam a best time of 28.32 in the 50 breaststroke to take third.Â
Akron advanced three swimmer to the finals in the 500 freestyle. Junior Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) finished 12th overall, second in the B-Final with a personal best time of 4:50.40. Senior Emma King (Centerville, Ohio) (4:51.21) finished 14th, while sophomore Brooke Lamoureux (Belleville, Ontario) (4:52.64) finished 17th overall.Â
Cooper touched the wall in a personal best time of 25.14 in the 50 backstroke to take third place. Pash finished first in the B-Final, 11th overall in the 200 individual medley in a personal best time of 2:01.69. In the 50 freestyle, Waggoner swam a time of 23.01 to earn fourth place.Â
To conclude the first night of competition at the NIC, Akron earn another top time in the 400 medley relay. The team of Cooper, Fischer, Movold and Waggoner touched the wall first a meet record breaking time of 3:39.54.
The Zips continue competition at the NIC on Friday, March 15, will prelims beginning at 9:30 a.m. and finals set for 6 p.m..
