AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team continues road action this week, travelling to Pittsburgh on Thursday, Feb. 7, for an 8:30 p.m. make-up match at the Oxford Athletic Club.
The teams were scheduled to play on Jan. 20, but were forced to postpone because of weather and travel issues.
In their last action, the Panthers (2-3 overall, 0-1 ACC) fell to West Virginia, 5-2, on Feb. 3.
Akron (7-0 overall) won its seventh consecutive match with a 4-3 victory over Boise State on Feb. 2.
"We are excited to play an ACC team, and we know that we have the talent needed to win, if we put our full effort in from start to finish," ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Alex (Santos) does an excellent job of preparing his players, so we have a serious challenge on our hands. We've played a strong schedule thus far, and it will only get stronger against Pitt."
In series action, Akron leads Pitt, 2-1.
In singles action, the Zips are led by redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) at No. 1. This week's MAC Singles Player of the Week, she is 13-3 overall and 5-0 in singles play this spring.
At No. 2, sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) is 8-6 overall and 5-1 this spring.
In doubles action, junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and Vasilescu stand 9-5 overall and 4-3 this spring.
At No. 2, Geier and sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany), the MAC Doubles Team of the Week, are 5-1 overall and 2-1 this spring.
