HILTON HEAD ISLAND – Senior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) fired an even-par 72 final round to finish the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate fourth overall, while the Zips completed the first spring tournament 16th overall (+57, 313-308-300 – 921) on Tuesday.

Grayson defeated three GolfStat Top 100 players in South Carolina Aiken's Dan Sheehan (72nd) and August Lindvall (74th) along with 96-ranked Jack Lang from Davidson with rounds of 71-72-72 for a 215 (-1) 54-hole performance. Grayson used 10 pars and three birdies mixed with three bogeys for the even-slate total. Lang finished tied for fifth on the leaderboard with an even-par 216, while Sheehan (+3, 219) placed in a three-way tie for 10th and Lindvall was tied at 34th (+9, 225).

Grayson opened the final round with four-straight par scores before capitalizing with a birdies on the par-5, 543-yard fifth hole. Two holes later, he gave a stroke back and finished the front-9 at even par with 36 strokes.

On the back-9, Grayson wasted no time moving back to 1-under par with a birdie on hole No. 10, a 415-yard par-4. Again, his scorecard was even after three holes, but on hole No. 15, Grayson recorded birdie for a third time, on the par-5, 544-yard 15th hole. He finished the 18-hole round with a pair of par scores and a bogey.

For the tournament, Grayson notched 34 pars, 11 birdies, eight bogeys and a double bogey.

Brad Bawden of Memphis claimed individual top honors with a 4-under par 212 tournament effort. He carded rounds of 70 (-2), 72 (E) and 70 (-2), while High Point's Brandon Einstein and Brendan MacDougall claimed second (-3, 213) and third (-2, 214), respectively.

During the final round, Charleston Southern fired a 10-under par team total and climbed seven spots to edge Furman by four strokes, securing the team title with a 296-302-278 – 876 (+12) total.

Rounding out the scoring for the Zips were sophomore Fabian Sunden (Sweden), junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), freshmen Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) and junior Jacob Morgan (Lafayette, Ga.). Sunden used a 74 (+2) final round to climb eight spots on the leaderboard and finished tied for 51st overall (+14, 79-77-74 – 230), while McFarland and Bayerl took a slight dip.

McFarland completed the tournament with a steady 80-79-79 – 238 (+22) score, and Bayerl notched an 83-80-80 – 243 (+8) three-round total. Morgan moved up three spots during the final round with a 3-over final performance for an 87-82-75 – 244 (+28).

Akron will be back in action at the Palmetto Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, March 11-12 at the Palmetto Golf Course (Aiken, S.C.) hosted by South Carolina Aiken.
